First impression Mcgowen Precision Barrel
« on: June 19, 2010, 11:45:33 AM »
I am currently starting a budget F-class rifle based off of a Savage   Target Action; I have just got the first piece of the puzzle... a   Mcgowen Precision Barrel.
I ordered the barrel on 4-14-2010 and received the product on 6-16-2010.   The lead time that was given was 6 weeks, it is a little late but   that's to be expected when ordering a custom product.

  First Impressions:

Got down to the Post Office to pick up the package and  :wtf: ?? the package is damaged... Looks like the tube   they packed it in was a little short and the tip got smashed. I   proceeded to inspect the barrel, and it does not looked to be damaged.   (I'll have to put the project together to know for sure :-\ )

The barrel itself is a work of art.  Very nicely polished, chamber is   smooth, rifling is crisp and sharp, bore looks to be mirror lapped, and   the 11 degree target crown looks very evenly cut and exit is sharp. 8)

So far I like what I see, but the proof will be down range.. All I need   now is the rest of the puzzle. Just waiting on the action and stock from   Sharp Shooter Supply. (come on SSS don't let me down!)
  Can't Wait... :shake: :shaka:

On most Saturdays or Sundays my brother and I can be found at KHSC in the mornings. We usually get there early and mess with loads.

Oh yes. Once a month we try to go out to Puuloa and shoot with the rifle club. Check out www.Puuloa.com for more info.  Supposedly they are trying to put together real F-class matches, and next year the marines are supposed to reopen the 1k yard side of the range. This is all hearsay at the moment, but I am hopeful.

Is this part of the gun you used in the F-class competition?

No.
Unfortunately I did not get my action yet.  I have been waiting for months for Sarp Shopoter Supply to send me my timed and trued Savage Target Action and a LVT composite stock.  They are way overdue, but all info I can gather says they are slow but the best there is for Savage work..

Here is the rifle I used for the competition.

All it is, is a practically factory Remington 700 BDL in .30-06 with a Choate tactical stock and a MWerks F-Class bipod. I lightened the trigger a bit and use handloads.
It's not the best options for F-Class, but its all I got right now. ;D
Miyoko (in the back ground) seems to think I'm nuts.

That doesn't look like the F-open rifle I was expecting. I'm sure you'll be doing much much better with your 6mm.

Is that a Mueller Scope? What do you think of it.

Now I might have to look into picking up a Stevens 200 to try out.

I can't wait to see what your new rig looks like. I checked out the LVT stock and it is mighty nice  :geekdanc:

Haha yup. That's why I was happy with such a low score.  ;)

Now, if that 6br shoots like that rifle I'll have to reevaluate my shooting skills.

It is. It's a mueller 8.5x25 power. It's not bad for the price but get a bit cloudy at 20X and higher.
It's nothing like my brothers leupold mk iv. Now that's an optic. You can see .30 cal bullet holes at 300 yards!
I just ordered a sightron siii 20x42 fixed power with the modified mil dot today. From reviews I have seen they are supposed to be very bright and clear ( supposedly as good as a leupold), but cost about a third less.

I'll write up what I think about it when I use it. Hope it's worth the $500+

I've read nothing but good things from the Sightron lineup. Looks like a good buy. You'll be all set for the next competition :)

I'm sure you'll do much better w/ the 6mm then the .30-06. Nice barrel though! Can't wait to see the finished product.

Hey, now, no knocking the .30-06!  At the last Chuck Taylor class, I was able to hold MOA at 500 yards using a m1903a4 and Prykal surplus M2 ball ammo!
The difference between theory and reality is that, in theory, there is no difference between theory and reality.

+1 on that! I love my -06. I think with modern powders and projetiles available today the .30-06 could match or better the .308.
I know for sure that with the ability to pack more/slower powder in the case and use 190 grain plus bullets, the ought six has a definite advantage over the .308.

If only I could fix that loose nut behind the butt, I might be able to show those .308 guys.  ;)

Heavies, I read about the problems with delays and lack of communication from Sharp Shooter Supply over on THR. I hope that all gets cleared up.

Yep. I have a thread there asking about sharp shooter supply.
The consensus is that they produce darn good products, but their CS is very bad. I called last week and I got a recording that they were at some kind of event and they would not be back till this week Monday. Many have said to be patient for a custom made product, they are good peoples, don't worry you'll get your stuff, and all that jive.  But, that is not the point. When a buisness tells you a date, they should meet that date. If not, they should be responsable enough to give you a reason for not being able to meet that date. I hope that their product is all that hype, but I don't think I will be doing any more buiness with them in the future. Some folks may find that type of customer service acceptable, but I do not.

Did you get your rifle or scope yet?
I really want to hear about how they work out for you.

2a,
I have not got my action and stock, as of yet, from Sharp Shooter Supply.  I have been asking around and posting on other boards for info and commenting on SSS.  I did finally get a hold of them by email last week, and they told me that my action will be shipped by 20 August 2010.  (I have to have at least the action before September as my permit to acquire will expire)  I had to email tons of times, busy signals up the yingyang, or the phone just rang with no answer at all.(I did make these calls during their business hours too) All I can say is I am very disappointed in their customer service, and I will not be doing business with SSS again.  It is a shame because they carry lots of cool and hard to find options for Savage rifles.
Before I chose to use SSS, I did a lot of internet searches on the company, and I could find very few unsatisfied customers. It seems recently, with the current boom of firearms sales and the major growth in the shooting sports, they must have become overwhelmed with orders. To me they should either grow the business, or stop taking on more orders than they can process in a reasonable time. Instead they take as many peoples money they can and give their customers rations of shit.

On THR is some background on the situation.

As for the Sightron... Yes I got it, and I am impressed by it.
I'll have to takes some pics, and give a review on it. I'll start a new thread on it when I get a chance.
