Three people were killed, including the shooter, said Lt. James Rhodes of the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office. One person suffered a traumatic injury, he said. The shooter died of a self-inflicted gunshot, Rhodes said.

I hope this isn't a trend with the malls being full of Christmas shoppers and all.

i hope this isn't a trend EVER.  I swear obummer is brainwashing people to commit these crimes so he can use it as an "ammunition" for banning guns.

If this sick guy used an assault weapon it's only a matter of time before anti gun groups start screaming louder to ban assault weapons.

The worst part oregon is a open carry state. Dont know if the mall was a gun free zone.

I'm sorry but I dont understand open carry. Yea I get it but you also could just get attacked from behind where the aggressor could just neutralize you or your gun first and then do greater harm later.  He/she could take or maybe use your own gun against you. Basically put unwanted attention on yourself. CCW is way more practical IMO.  I spoke with a retired officer once and he said that every hot call they go to is potentially a gun call... they bringing it to one (since it's obviously on their hip). At least with CCW, the potential attacker doesnt know it... until youre pointing it at him/her.

Your number one Option for Personal Security is a lifelong commitment to avoidance, deterrence, and de-escalation.

Someday someone may kill you with your own gun, but they should have to beat you to death with it because it is empty.

Again, it took a firearm to stop a firearm.. Yeah, he shot himself but thats what it took.... :-\

Very unfortunate but hopefully there are some who turn pro gun after the obvious.....

+1 on open carry, I agree that it lets the criminal mind plan before doing wrong......

So what they're saying is, this asshole was basically recreating that level from Call of Duty where you walk all calm and cool through an airport and mow down as many people as possible?  How about instead of banning guns, we ask ourselves how healthy it is for kids to play video games where the kid is put in a level that simulates being an active shooter with the maximum level of realism and detail?

I hate that word..."assault rifle" like calling a spoon used by an obese person a "fat spoon"
These people that commit these crimes are just that - crazy criminals. There were two crimes committed in Waipahu just days of each other using hammers.

Some people aren't old enough to apply for a CCW permit (21 in Oregon).  Oregon allows OC at 18.

There's so much speculation when legislators try to pass such bans. Only "if" they didn't have a high cap magazine etc. They forget the criminals already broke a very well known law such as murder. Legislators fail to understand that once laws fail, the only course they have is to empower those that follow the law.

You're not the first one to pose that theory, except with respect to anti-gunners in general.  for some weak-minded prople, it only takes an encouraging word or video or whatever to tip them over.  I suspect that's why we have copycat killers.

Lawmakers are not necessarily intelligent or wise.  All they are for sure, are "electable."  So put the blame where it lies: on the electorate.

If we did have CCW and something like this happened, would it be legal to shoot the guy? What would be the appropriate way to do so or what would YOU do?

Same story they always tell
Quote

"He was a very loved individual that always seemed as if he had great intentions and a heart of gold. I know that must be hard for people to see/think/understand, but It's the truth. I don't know what caused him to do such a horrendous, terrible thing, but I do hope that somehow, answers will be available to us all."

Philpot said Roberts had recently broken up with a girlfriend and was considering moving to Hawaii. "I just had drinks with him in November, and he had just moved into a new place and was totally stoked about it," she said. "I can't believe he did this."

dirsh asked,

Quote

I pre-planned this a long time ago when the first of these creeps started shooting up a supermall. When it happened again in Aurora Colorado, I posted it again.

So, once more, here's my pre-planned behavior.

Quote
I don't want to sound bravado-ish, but in my meager "tactical" outlook, I've mentally rehearsed what I would do in a case like this or a mall shooting.  If at all possible, bearing in mind the people in my immediate vicinity, I would at least deliver suppressive fire.  Again, not being macho or heroic, but at my age I would be thinking of hopefully saving a few folks who had their whole lives ahead of them.  Yeah, there may be a case of misidentification, and I myself might get shot by another CCW-er or off-duty cop in the audience, but I predetermined to take my chances on that happening... but, again, at my age....

Maybe something like this should be another addition to everyone's tactical thinking and their "global" situational awareness.  The smoke/gas canisters and the reported flak jacket are a new wrinkle, and I'll have to think about that, now, too, but I've made and awful lot of "lucky" shots in 60 years of shooting... and I love the new laser sights I recently put on my carry pieces.

I'm not sure I conveyed my thinking on this without looking like a mall ninja or a wannabe hero, and I'm sure to be attacked by others for presenting this, but that's the way I started to look at it after an infamous mall shooting a couple of years ago where the a-hole was up on the second level of a mall and fired down at the crowd.

More youthful folks, especially if they have kids, may look at it differently.  In the internet lingo, YMMV.

In another post, where they were talking about rifles being more effective, I added,

Quote
For myself, a handgun with laser sights will have to do.  I mounted lasers on both my carry guns.  And I suspect (tacticians can challenge me on this) that just painting the creep's general area with the laser dot will be pretty effective as a suppressant itself.
