It's worse if you 80 years old.

My opinion in this is that some people are selfish.  And greedy.  Career before service in Politics is wrong yet it happens all over congress.

The job of POTUS is selfless.  This guy was a career politician and a mediocre one at that.  He wanted one (and hopefully two) last hurrahs before riding off into the sunset laden with his moneybags.

He caved and became a puppet for the man behind the curtains.
