Tsingtao Beer
« on: October 25, 2023, 01:18:39 PM »
A few years ago I stopped drinking Tsingtao ( pronounced Chingtao ) after a buddy told me about
his experience in an up scale hotel in China. While at the hotel bar, he asked for a Tsingtao beer
and was told by the bartender that Tsingtao was not available and that he should order Harbin
instead. When he asked the bartender why Tsingtao was not available, the bartender replied in a
sarcastic manner and said: Look this is a respectable hotel and Tsingtao is a low class beer. He
went on to say that because Tsingtao is a low class beer, that is the reason why we ship so much
of it to you Americans.
Maybe the bartender was right.

About 50 years ago when I was in high school, we got "Buckhorn" beer from longs drugs.
It was ok, but at that age I didn't care.

My favorite was new primo from circa 1980.
I think it was made by strohs.

I never thought Tsingtao beer is considered a lowly beer.

The thing's pretty expensive here.

Yep in those days price before quality.  I didn't have a lot money back then.

I still don't nowadays, relatively speaking, but I can buy the better ones now. ;D

The Primo (Strohs) I like had a nice malty flavor.
Apparently Pabst brewing bought the name.
Pabst/Primo had a similar malty flavor.
But Primo brand is gone now. Pabst is still malty and still around.
Funny thing that at my old working place, Pabst was a traditional favorite.
dammit, now I'm thinking about it...
and a cigar too

I used to enjoy Tsingtao with Chinese food until I switched to Harbin.
Back in the 80's I used to drink Lowenbrau and I thought it was just terrific
until a guy from Germany told me Lowenbrau is poor people's beer.
That was kind of a buzz kill.

I didn't know Lowenbrau was a poor people's beer.  We used to drink Lowenbrau after pau work in the 80's also.  We liked to buy the Baby bottles.  Same with Baby Millers.

Lowenbrau has a noble ring to it.

Lowenbrau and baby millers = Good times.

You guys remember Lowenbrau dark? I could be wrong but it might have been
a winter special beer.

I also used to like Old Fezzywig's Ale sold by Samuel Adams. It came in a holiday season
12 pack along with a porter beer and the regular Sam Adams. SA managed to really
screw things up when they decided to include only 2 bottles of Old Fezzywigs and filled up
the rest of the box with cheaper varieties. They got a lot of complaints from the customers.
I no longer see this holiday special in the stores.

I liked ‘em.

I found the Sam Adams holiday pack at Sams Club today. In order to get 4 bottles of
Old Fezziwigs you have to buy a mixed case of 24 at $28+taxes. I think I'll pass on it.

I have heard that Sam Adams monkeyed around with the formula and it does not
taste like the original recipe. The label no longer has Fezziwig's picture on it. I wonder
if they are trying to de-gender the brand. After all Old Fezziwig could also be a female or
any other gender you so choose. Heck just try and call a woman an Old Fezziwig and
see what kind of reaction you'll get.
