i own no red dots...

I think they are cool.  However with that being said, it is something for the young'uns.  I still stick to irons.  No need for batteries or power sources or re-training or re-thinking.

Back when I served they trained us on irons up to 300 yards.  Good enough for me. 

edited to add:  Oh wait.  We talking pistols.  Sorry.  They are still cool but not for me. 

I voted fad.
But they do have a useful purpose.
It's not a cure-all for poor habits and marksmanship.

I have to admit that they do have their place. As my eyes go thru the aging process,
this becomes painfully obvious. As an official old fut, this is the future. Who knows
what new tech will become common place in just a few more years.

Definitely the future.  Faster and more accurate.

If it's just a fad ... Do any of you have red dots/ holographic sights on any long guns particularily ar15s? Lol

I dont have any myself.. I keep wanting to buy a slide for my g19 but something else always come up.😂

I guess the way everyone hypes it to be on YouTube.. It looks like a trend but instead of lining up front and rear sights

it's the future and a lot of handguns are being cut for them.  They have many advantages...faster and more precise for medium to long distances, target focus, better view of the target for self defense, easier to use in low light.

I'm slowly moving to red dots, looking for a Holosun for my carry pistol.

Its the future with the caveat you have irons available incase you run out of battery or the electronics fail. Still need to know how to shoot irons but no longer the primary aiming solution.

Just around OIF, not all m16s had ACOGS.

Now in basic, acogs are standard issue.

Not a red dot, but the concept is going from irons as back ups and optics as primary.

Were seeing more SF units with red dots and even a general or 2 with them when they have their sidearm.

RDS is the future as theyre becoming more reliable and cheaper.

Look at the M17/18, all come optics ready.

Every single gun I own has a red dot on it. It just makes target acquisition and follow up shots that much faster. It’s still important to be proficient with irons as a backup but with the battery life on these new dots and the durability I feel you can put complete confidence in them so why not take an opportunity to have that much more of an advantage.

Personally, I think it’s the present and not the future. It’ll be here to stay.  While I do have pistols with no optics, my main handguns that I use and train with all have them. 

I do feel closed emitter is the future

I voted but to be honest I haven't tried one yet. Hope to when i get my new glock.

I am an old fut but I realize they are the future. Iron sights still have their place, tho. I like to always have good back up irons
I like Holosun bc they are a little more affordable, I like the reticle, they work great for my application
Both my carry pistols have Holosun's. The P365 has 2 slides. 1 with RDS, 1 with the iron night sights. If I'm going to pocket carry, I'll use the iron sights bc fits in my pocket better and my pocket holster is not cut for a RDS. Takes some practice to get used to the RDS, but once you are used to sight acquisition, they work great. Good to have options

Some handguns I don't like a RDS on them. Like a revolver or a classic 1911. For a 2011 or a more modern style 1911 is fine. IMO, a classic 1911 or a revolver and a RDS just don't go together.

For close quarter self defense, RDS isn't much of an advantage
I feel most of a civilians' defensive distance will be at close quarters. Might not have time to even use any type of sights, irons or RDS, just point shoot or from the hip.

I was just going to post this point of view.  Thanks for bringing it up Stang.

Like I mentioned earlier, RDS are cool and neat, and are here to stay.  They will continue to get more popular and mainstream.  I had a hard time acquiring the dot the first time I tried it but I know it gets faster with training.  I think RDS has a purpose in competitive shooting and tactical operations.

My tool of choice for self defense is a "get off of me" tool.  Chances are I wouldn't even aim.  Just point and shoot. 

With that being said, I've been training at the bulleye range at KHSC with this gun.  I'm pleased with the progress I'm doing with the iron sights at 25 yards.

As is, my tool doesn't print when in my front pocket.  I'm concerned the RDS would make it harder so it's hard to justify the added mass.

My other tool doesn't print also.  But sometimes it does.  Depending.

exactly, for ccw it is added bulk.
for compettion shooting ,it is a big help.
