One of the reasons why my son moved my grandchildren to Vegas was because of the poor quality of education.

    The memorandum mentions that his 3 year contract has not been revised.  He's not even 1 1/2 years into his contract......

Ridiculous is not the word to be used.  More like retarded.

edited to add:  It never ends.  Money being used for other than the children.  Meanwhile teachers like my daughter spends their own money buying materials so the students can get quality education.

What I find interesting is that Vegas's education system is ranked worst than HI's one.  I went to public school with kids who are dumb, there is no way Vegas could be worst. What I think is that a certain demographic pulls down the average. So unless your kids/grandkids fall into this demographic, they should be fine.

But now the other factor is is friends/associations. Would this pull your kids down, cause we know this too plays a factor in a childs development.

Another thing to add, is someone in his postition under paid compared to other states that have the same likeness and cost of living?  A teacher who has decades in the system can make up to $140K a year. And the super works well over 40hrs a week.

UH's head football coach gets paid beans compared to other schools. IIRC, it's like $100K. Compare this to USC offensive coordinate who makes more. But USC has a much more profitable and bigger program. Which is why UH head coaches often aren't the best, or are guys who want their foot in the door like Chow. Who for years was an USC offiensive coordinater, but never head coach.

Then look at Dave Shoji who was the most underpaid womens v-ball coach with a winning record. So he produced year after year compared to the football team. Luckily, his son went to Iolani and he loved HI, which is why I suspect he worked for cheap all these years. I dont remember how much it was, but it was an article in the news paper and I was like "wow, thats it?".

When it comes to certain jobs, and education is in this category IMO, the compensation should be merit-based.

Offer a good compensation package, with top healthcare, retirement fund matching, etc.  But, the base salary should be at a nominal level.

Then add incentives based on measurable performance.  Schools are judged by the number of students getting good grades on standardized tests, achievements in academics, sports and extracurriculars, scholarships earned, and acceptance into top competitive colleges and universities.

Using these and similar criteria, bonuses can be added to the Superintendent's compensation if those criteria are met or exceeded.  The better they perform, the better their income.

We hear all the time about how this school is in the top 5% of the nation, and others in the bottom 5%.  The Super should be looking to make all the schools in his control top education centers.  That means replacing weak teachers, setting standards, allocating resources/funding, identifying problem areas and solving them, etc.

Too often someone with 30 years experience gets a very nice salary, and they are focused more on keeping their job than on making improvements.
The reasonable man adapts himself to the world;
the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself.
Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man.

Schools are indoctrination centers. All they do is teach children how to be obedient serfs and give them just barely enough knowledge to get by and not ask too many questions.

I'd love to have a job that would give me a $10K raise after only 1 and a half years.

So, how much raise after 3 years?  $20K?  30K?

Woo Hoo!!!........   Damn I love the BOE.

Sorry children.  Go ask your teacher.........
