Thanks Gaslight Gary

Way to ignore the “rainbow” communist color revolution that tried to turn anyone who stands for patriotism, liberty and constitutional law into enemies of the state.

Not gaslighting at all, it isn't even a pejorative. Jonathan Haidt laid out a moral foundation theory with 6 main values in humans. Conservatives, liberals, and libertarians tend to score differently on how strong or weak particular moral values are held.
Care/Harm
Fairness/Cheating
Loyalty/Betrayal
Authority/Subversion
Sanctity/Degradation
Liberty/Oppression.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moral_foundations_theory

My comment had nothing to do with communism or any other political ideology, I just don't personally relate to the strong feelings some have towards the flag and similar symbols, like the national anthem.

What if he was injured and cannot stand?  What if he has a hearing problem and didn't know it was playing?  What if he isn't a US citizen, have you checked his citizenship status prior to this post? What if he has a contract that states he cannot stand when the anthem is playing? What if he doesn't understand how songs sound and thus thinks its just a random person talking over the speaker system?

#objective

None of that has anything to do with my observation. I wasn't talking about Lebron James, I was talking about people's reaction to Lebron James.

I hear that often - mostly from people who haven't served in the US military.
Sports played at the level James is playing can only be afforded by a safe and secure country like the United States. That is the purpose of the national anthem. To recognize that. Ever watched Iraqi soccer / football?

I don't really watch any sports so I don't know where you are going with Iraqi soccer.

The sacrifices of those who fought to make and keep the USA a free country are not lost upon me but I don't understand the devotion to objects as symbols. If some ANTIFA punk punched an elderly veteran I would be very mad but if some ANTIFA punk burned the US flag it does not produce an emotional response in me. It isn't politics either, I wouldn't be offended if they ripped up a bible either even though I go to church.

It's not about our admiration. it's about his disrespect and disdain for the nation that made his lifestyle possible.

This.^^^^^  Argue all you want.  Explain all you want.  Rationalize all you want.

But ultimately it just comes down to this.

Where was your observation conducted? What were the parameters of your objective research to ensure there was no bias towards poeple's reaction to Lebron James. Were they polled to be either fans or not? etc.

he/she already admitted to being objective until it is time to move goalposts to subjective...

I find objectivity is like humility.

You asked a bunch of what ifs about Labron's reason for not standing which were irrelevant to what I said. They were objective questions but not applicable at all to my observation and I was illustrating why to you. You actually quoted my post so I don't know how you are going to now claim you weren't talking about what I said.

Well for starters you had 5 comments giving negative opinions of Lebron's action plus the video is also critical. It is also clearly in line with the pattern of criticisms of other sports stars, such as Colin Kaepernick made on this forum in the past. Is that an objective sample representative of the USA at large? Of course not but I didn't make a comment about national opinion, I made a comment that I see some who get very angry at this type of behavior. Whether this sentiment is held by 1% of Americans or 50% of Americans is not relevant to my question because I only question why such sentiments exist.

It's not about our admiration. it's about his disrespect and disdain for the nation that made his lifestyle possible.

I think that is a fair explanation. If someone were to disrespect a veteran returning home from war I would find that very objectionable, but when it comes to symbols like flags and anthems it just doesn't produce any emotional response from me. Burn a bible, burn a USA flag, burn an image of the EEF family crest, I just wouldn't care because they are just symbols. They wouldn't be destroying the actual word of god, my actual family, or my actual country. Symbolism just doesn't have much pull on me so I find it interesting that symbolism produces such strong emotions in others. I might think Lebron's grievance is stupid or ignorant but I am not faulted in any way by his choice to not stand so it doesn't make me angry.

Do you think Lebron sits during the anthem for the purpose of disrespecting this country or does he do it out of criticism of some aspect of this country? Would such a difference even matter?

Would you do what Lebron did?

How about this:  If you were at a funeral, would you silently play on your i-Phone in front of the person doing a Eulogy for the deceased?

Sometimes we do what is prudent in respect to other people around us, regardless of how we personally feel.  There are times the battle must be postponed for another time.

You even said you wouldn't care if someone burned the image of the EEF family crest.  What about your other family members.  Are you sure they feel the same as you?  Can you just stand there and watch them cry?  Wouldn't you fight, if not for you, but for them?

Same as this country.  We criticize, argue, lambast it.  But for many of us, it's our family.
Sometimes you gotta know when to save your bullets.

=================
Symbolism is an important concept in the evolutionary process.
Disrespecting a symbol ultimately leads to the destruction of a species.
It's called Darwinism. Darwin is my hero. Let me explain.

Primitive creatures are unable to understand that an asphalt roadway means that cars and trucks will be traveling there.
That's why you find dead cats, dogs, birds, etc on the road. They don't understand or respect what that strip of asphalt represents.

A police badge is an important symbol. When humans disrespect the symbol of a badge on a cop, they think they can do whatever they want.
That is why you have so many incidents of assault, shoplifting, murder, etc today. It's because people have lost respect for symbols of authority.
Civil disobedience ensues. Loss of civility ultimately leads to destruction. It goes back to biblical times.
eg. crazy guy on drugs kills somebody, then cop has to kill him.
eg. motorcyclist goes 150 mph down the H1 because he ignored the speed limit symbol... crash! he's dead.
Those are classic examples of Darwinism.

Star athletes used to be symbols of respect and admiration. Kids wanted to be like them.
Kids still idolize people. It's human nature. But they idolize the wrong types of people nowadays.
They idolize the rap music gang-bangers. You wonder why you have gangs at Mayor Wright and KPT?

Lebron is a star athlete and a symbol of success. Kids want to emulate him.
That is why so many people are upset when he exhibits disrespectful behavior towards the national anthem.
His actions can influence the behavior of children directly.
The flag and anthem are symbols of what America strives to be. It may not be perfect. Nothing is perfect.
But it's a pretty good compromise.

What, Me Worry?
