Whats your plan if there's a lithium battery fire

I live in a small condo that the windows open slightly. So to toss any device out the window may be not possible. This is 1 reason why I didn't buy an electric bicycle.  Compare this to my old condo where I could just toss it off the lanai and it would land in a open concrete parking that has no cars or people.

When I Was looking into an Ebike, all the vids I saw of battery fires from bikes and E boards, the unit began to smoke for like 5 seconds. Then the huge flame emerged.  Sometimes, the person was in front the unit and saw the smoke, but their reaction time was too long. From the time they noticed the smoke, 1st they unplugged, but that didn't work. By then it was too late and all they could do is run.  Which would cause a fire in ones home.

So the plan was to be ready and have a plan ready.  If the unit began to smoke, toss it.  Never charge while not home or sleeping. But then I measured the battery and the opening of my window and it wouldn't fit.  Can't toss it out the front door as that's a hallway.

A trap like charging station that would drop the battery into a bucket of water if it goes on fire.

This would mean to have a bucket filled at all times.

Large batteries would be the most serious problem to deal with. I know the airlines have some sort of pouch you can put a mobile device in that has some material inside which is supposed to stop or contain it.

Charge it in an oven or fire proof safe, opened with up to date smoke detectors. Close the door if the alarms go off.

Lithium-ion batteries are a class B fire, and most common ABC extinguishers, foam and water are okay to put out a fire with them.

Lithium batteries in larger sizes that contain metal are different and considered class D.  Using water on it would be very bad.  You need a class D extinguisher instead.

Lithium fire will react violently with water producing explosive hydrogen gas and toxic lithium hydroxide.

True for lithium batteries containing metal.

Lithium-ion battery uses liquid and is okay to extinguish with water.

i believe the lithium-ion polymer batteries are also okay with water.

This is what I think I need, if I am going to reevaluate riding a bicycle to work.  Thank you.

I wonder why this isnt' mentioned in the article. It just states that gotta submerge the batter in water.

That usually results in too thin batter.

What does the science say?

Get the Lithium-ion Battery vaccine.

It won't prevent the fire, but you're less likely to die from it.
