Traveling to Washington State, any recommendations for Self Defense tools (Read 2029 times)

Westside_Redneck

I've got a trip booked to Tacoma Washington, I'm going on this trip out of family obligation so it's not like I wanted to go in the middle of winter.

From what I can tell, I'm going to end up in Tacoma Washington. I've been looking at online crime maps and unfortunately where I will be spending the most time, looks to be in a very orange area in terms of reported crime. So I know I can always find a gun store or a sporting goods place and grab a canister of pepper spray. But beyond that, I would like to know from you folks (particularly WA folks) what self defense weapons are on the table that I can take with me aboard the airline via checked luggage that will call very little attention. I have a knife but unfortunately it looks be be a bit long for WA state, I do have a shorter knife but I need to make a sheath for it.

Preferably I do not want to have to carry a knife, too much liability. I've got a tactical pen, a flashlight and I'm getting some winter tactical style gloves.

If you have a CCW permit from another state in this list, WA honors them under reciprocity agreements:

Idaho (Idaho Enhanced Permit only)
Kansas
Louisiana
Michigan (non-resident concealed pistol licenses issued by Washington state are not recognized by Michigan)
North Carolina
North Dakota (Class 1 North Dakota permits only)
Ohio
Oklahoma
Utah

Stun guns are legal to carry.

This article has the list of what you can and can't carry defensively:

Thanks for the reply Flapp, I do not have a CC license as of yet in this state but I really want to get one, particularly if I can carry when visiting Oahu or Big Island.

Some good stuff to know, but would once again like to consult the Washington residents about wearing motorcycle gloves or full fingered tactical gloves for keeping your hands warm with the incidental benefit of an immediate on body attitude adjuster. According to the crime map of the area, assaults look to be much higher compared to murder and armed robbery rates.

I'm a legal resident of the state of WA, although I spend most my time in Hawaii.
Tacoma is a BAD! place in many areas. Hill top is #1.
Pierce county and Tacoma Cops are useless, if you can avoid it don't talk to them.
Get good rental car insurance and use it. Drive out, through, or over the problem!
Rental cars are cheaper than the hospital ER.
Tacoma hospitals SUX.
Don't walk anywhere,  if you can help it.
Daylight outside only. No night time explorations.
No bars.
I have a WA state CCW and I avoid Tacoma.
Anywhere you see black people be very situationally aware
that is where most the Tacoma problem is.
Sounds racist, but it is truth.
There are a lot of Military guys there so not everyone is bad.
just pay attention.

Y'all have a good safe trip.

Pepper spray is the best for traveling besides CCW.  TSA allows it but most airlines prohibit it in checked luggage.

wouldn't worry about it as the worst that'll happen is it could get confiscated and you spend $20 for another one.  I haven't had mine confiscated yet.

"Wow!  Sounds like you found the paradise you've been searching for!"
Sounds kind of cynical. or sarcastic.
I'm just taking advantage of technology, real estate, and family.
I can ignore Hawaii gun and income tax laws, but play with guns and pay no income taxes
in WA.  As long as airplanes fly. I'd buy a boat an sail if Hawaii wasn't so anti boat.
Trip is longer in a boat but I can park one in Oregon.
Paradise is an interesting concept.
I think it is freedom.
Hawaii isn't that nor is Washington.
But you as an engineer know there are always trade offs.

Happy New years!.

Really,  if you aren't a WA resident,  cops and laws there
aren't very friendly.
