I have the WorkSharp Ken Onion Edition.

If you're not a professional or someone with decades of experience, and you don't want to spend hours keeping knives sharp, it's hard to beat this setup.

Most time-consuming part, which isn't bad at all, is swapping the various grits as you go.  Once a knife is sharp, you can just keep the highest grit band installed.

I've used various sharpening stones and devices for many years, and this one makes quick and accurate work of what is normally a tedious process.

i would think you would only get the professional if you are considering the $1000 ones
the elite is more than adequate for my needs

I actually enjoy the process haha. I’m used to sharpening by hand on stones and I’m ok at it. But as I get into the more higher end expansive knives I’d like something that I can make sure I don’t mess up those expensive blades

That's the thing then, isn't it?  Accuracy, precision, consistency, etc. 

All the things you use a machine for when you don't have the skill or talent to do all of that yourself.

i've never been that good at sharpening mainly because I never did that much by hand other than my pocket knives.  Those got the most use.  Other knives tended to keep their factory edge from sitting in a drawer, so sharpening them was rare.

We sharpened axes, sheath knives and pocket knives in Boy Scouts.  Basic sharpening equipment and basic instruction.

i kept waiting for a sale on the Ken Onion model, but they never seemed to have any.

My daughter finally asked, "What do you want for your birthday?"

I figure my premium folding knives I'll still use the wetstone freehand method bc I get good results that way. The Ken Onion model I'll use for my garden tools, folders that aren't premium, my large fixed blades, machete, axe. I'll try it on my CRKT blades first and see how it goes. All goes well, I will try it on my premium folders. We'll see...

The Ken Onion also doubles as a handy mini belt sander. Due to the increasing instability of our grid it's good to have a non-electric option now.

I got the Ken Onion sharpener today and it works great
Sharpened a CRKT folder with the fine grit and 6000 grit and now can push cut newspaper and only took a few minutes
Did 2 kitchen knives with same result.
It works great and its fast too. I'll try it on some garden tools in a few weeks, but I'm sure it won't disappoint
It's more than enough for most people. I am super satisfied with this sharpener
I have a lot of knives and tools that I can work on. This system will make it quick and effective
