But THIS is what happens when someone who is trained to use a firearm, has one and shoots back.

Agree but if we confine this to a Hawaii incident lets say, people would have been killed. Our liberal state as far as I know doesn't even allow off duty police officers to carry concealed as far as I know (maybe I'm wrong), and there certainly isn't anyone armed in any establishment other than banks. In many mainland cities it is off duty LE that save the day, sort of speak. Great story (other than the guy getting shot) and yes, trained people, whether law enforcement or trained law abiding CCW holders do make a difference in many bad situations.

I think that off duty LEO carry here in Hawaii.  I think it was an off duty that shot that criminal in Baskin Robins Kapolei a few years back.

You may be correct, I don't know for sure. I know federal can for sure.

LEO are required to carry gun, badge and handcuffs at all times. But not all do it.

Well that's good to know that it's a requirement. Thx for the info.

HR 218; Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act (LEOSA) allows all law enforcement, whether state, city, county, or federal to carry concealed nationwide.  There was an incident here some months ago where an out of state leo drew down on someone with a meat cleaver who had attacked someone.  Anyone else remember this and can provide more details?

I thought on a related thread one of our LE members said something about he couldn't conceal his firearm while off duty on school grounds while picking his kid up from school, that he had to leave it in his car. Does the requirement for them carrying off duty have some limitations, such as schools and maybe other areas as well? This would suck because maybe these types of areas are exactly where it would be beneficial if something was going down. Seems that if the government trusts our LEO all the time with firearms, to protect and defend, then they shouldn't have limitations. Not sure if this is true but seems I recall someone saying this regarding schools on another thread.

Its true:
"Although the general effect of LEOSA is to override state and local law, this is subject to limitations. LEOSA does not override:
-State laws permitting private property owners from limiting or prohibiting the carrying of concealed weapons on their property (such as public bars, private clubs, and places such as amusement parks)
-State laws prohibiting carrying concealed weapons on state or local government property (such as courthouses, schools or parks)

From my understanding, basically all leosa does is give leo nationwide ccw permits lol.

Kind of funny that when a gunman is taken down by ccw, it only gets a small article with little description and not much mention anywhere else but in hours after the Newport shooting there is a picture of the shooter, description of guns and kids are getting interviewed. I'm sure that there are many many more of these types of inccidents that occur but we never hear about it. Just goes to show how much influence the "powers that be" have over the media. They are truelly using the media to push their agenda.

Well that’s insanity at its finest if I’m interpreting this correctly. Correct me if wrong. Federal law gives the authority for off duty, retired LE, etc, to carry concealed weapons but the state and private property owners can prohibit them to carry on their premises. So sounds like where the majority of nut cases would strike, off duty LEO would not be armed. No wonder some LEO don’t carry as someone said. Probably most places where they would potentially encounter a deadly situation, they are not authorized to carry and would probably be criminally liable if they did have to use their firearm.

Ridiculous, and to boot, these are highly trained professionals equipped to deal with a crisis. How jacked up! The general public sure wants LE around when something bad is happening in their backyard but condemns guns when it doesn’t affect them directly.
