Straub called me to pick my drug/mental form/paperwork
« on: January 09, 2024, 01:39:59 PM »
1/26/24 edited to add

HPD said that the reason Straub asked me to get the form is because the form says the hospital can fax the completed form to HPD.   BUT HPD NOW HAS NO FAX!!  lol

Are all the doctors doing this?  In the past, the doctor/hospital dealt with hpd.

Now we have to take time to get the paperwork and bring to hpd so hpd can process my permit

I find that bizarre.  Given the possible issues these forms may facilitate if not accurate, breaking the "chain of custody" by allowing the applicant to courier -- and potentially alter -- the response is nothing less than surprising.

i imagine the doctor doesn't want to donate the required postage and handling costs to the government.

Then again, it might be a test.  Edit the forms, and be charged with a felony thereby losing your gun rights?

Nah.  They aren't that smart.   :geekdanc:

 Thanks Flap

My wife mentioned the same thing….that someone could alter the paperwork.   I’ll call hpd to double check.  Might be a new clerk at Straub.

It is possible they would give it to you in a sealed envelop which would show HPD that it wasn't altered but I am just speculating here. Let us know what ends up happening.

Could it be possible that these paperwork they want you to pick up is just that: paperwork.  You fill it out, sign that you authorize Straub to release your mental health information to HPD.

Then they send it to HPD.

I know HPD has the medical information waiver form but maybe Straub uses their own, with additional legal language that protects them.

if that were the case, why would they not just drop it in the mail like they do EVERY OTHER TYPE OF PAPERWORK they must provide you?

Makes no sense.  They should not need a signed authorization to release it to HPD unless the one HPD collected from you isn't good enough.  in that case, I'd ask why they don't fix that so you aren't signing worthless HPD authorizations AND having to sign another one at the clinic?

Just bumping this to see if anyone has this same situation with their doctor/hospital telling you to pick the mental/drug form from them

I’m thinking there is a new person in my doctors office

HPD say that the probable reason why Straub asked me to get the form is because the form says the hospital can fax the completed form to HPD.   BUT HPD NOW HAS NO FAX!!  lol

HPD and the government are not going to make any extra effort to streamline the acquisition and permitting process.

In their eyes more confusion and vagueness the better.

i agree.  If a major healthcare corporation and a well-funded law enforcement agency together can't figure out what HPD's email address is, it's not the applicant's job to intervene.

As I said, there should be a chain of custody consideration.  Does HPD let those they have in holding carry their case files to court?

I agree with you.   It seems like HPD doesn’t care to make things easier on handgun permitting.  I think I’m done buying with handguns for a while….too many trips and really long lines

Apply for permit
Have to pick medical from Straub
Deliver medical form (and new affidavit) to HPD
Pick up permit
Return to register pre-owned handgun
