Any good classes?

A lot of the legit masters that fled China are now dead. A lot of the stuff now taught is more based on Wushu than traditional combat arts.

What capacity are you looking to train in? I can recommend someone who teaches a soft style that still maintains and teaches most of the combat applications that most of the modern teachers of the style don't know or drowned out with woowoo mystical nonsense. Class meets every Sunday and is free.

I was reading and watching some Krav Maga articles and videos. My brother when younger went to a place in Nuuanu but he lost contacts over the years. I have no martial experience at all so something very beginner for older people like me.

Kung Fu will get you knocked out in a fight.  Learning MMA would be better as it factors in many different variables like: Ground work, boxing, Muay THai (kicking), wrestling, and their counters, etc...

But some training is better than none.

What makes Krav good is that every 5 years, the head of the org comes together to re-evaluate if they need to change anything.  THe issue is I only know of 1 instructor in Honolulu and IDK if he's legit or not.

Also factor in your fitness ability.

The Real Kung Fu

There's a reason why Kung Fu doesn't have a belt system.

The classes I took long ago had no belt system.  But they have proficiency certificates.  You test once a year to see if you earned one.

And it's not a given.

Krav maga is trash. You'd be better off watching YouTube videos and practicing on a heavy bag at home; would probably save you a lot of money.

If you are looking for a striking art, Muay Thai or boxing is your ticket. I can recommend mango tree for Muay Thai.

If you are looking for a grappling art, jiu jitsu is your ticket. I recommend one of the schools under Master Relson Gracie as he kept more of the self defense applications of his father's original system.

This was in response to the David Carredine pic that he posted. "Belt" system.

Good teachers, good people. I haven't met anyone from mango tree who wasn't happy with the training they received.

I know the owners and would never go there.

When they were working at UFC, Richie would always try to puff his chest when walking past me.  Mrs. CMO noticed it, as I was too busy focusing on my weights.  He does so probably cause his wife is always trying to get my attention, but I don't give her the time of day.  Mrs. CMO noticed this about her as well.  As I continued to ignore her, she would try even harder.

Then after a while of me ignoring Richie, he then did the same to Mrs. CMO.  Of course it wasn't when I was around or near her.  She would tell me as we were walking out of the gym together.

As for his knowledge about MMA, he is very knowledgeable. I know some guys who saw him fight and said he fights like shit, but some people are better teachers than do-ers.  Like Tiger Woods is a great golfer, but a shitty teacher.  His coach is a great coach, but a shitty golfer.

I've been looking into stuff for self defense.  Seems like Boxing is the simplest and easiest for someone wanting to do the bare minimum.  Jiu Jitsu is complex and requires time, but would be the best to know.    Krav and kick boxing are in the middle.

SFDDS aren't seen unless they want you to see them. Hence the SFDDS badge has Indian heritage behind it.
