The Next Issue-ammo?
« on: January 09, 2024, 11:20:47 PM »
My cousin sent me this message:
==
Washington Democrats opened the 2024 legislative session with another assault on gun rights.
This time they hope to reclassify ammunition as a “privilege” —
one that should be subject to an onerous tax because the one thing they love more than taking away guns is taking away your money.

And the war continues.  Can't take away guns?  Go after the ammo.  Can't go after either, go after their rights.

After all, there are countless clueless, socialist loving, bleating sheeple to go around and support it.  The oath of office and the Constitution means nothing to them.  All of it is open game.

Many states and other jurisdictions, including HI and DC, treat ammunition in a similar legal fashion as firearms.  e.g. If a felon is caught with live ammo, they are treated as having a firearm.  There's a recent Maryland case where police searched a man's home for illegal weapons and charged him for having shotgun shells.

The same restrictions for firearms sales -- state residency, age limits, prohibited persons, etc. -- apply to ammunition in these states/DC.

https://giffords.org/lawcenter/state-laws/ammunition-regulation-in-maryland/

Quote
Six states have enacted laws regulating ammunition sales and requiring purchasers
to pass a background check in order to buy ammunition. Two states, California and
New York, have passed laws requiring point-of-sale background checks on ammunition
purchasers, in a manner similar to background checks conducted on firearm
purchasers (although New York’s has not yet gone into effect). Four other states
(Connecticut, Illinois, Massachusetts, and New Jersey) require individuals to obtain
a relevant license or permit, after passing a background check, in order to purchase
or possess at least some types of ammunition.

Some other states restrict access to ammunition by people who are legally disqualified
based on their age, criminal history, or other factors, or require certain safety training to
qualify to purchase ammunition.
https://giffords.org/lawcenter/gun-laws/policy-areas/hardware-ammunition/ammunition-regulation/

https://www.capitol.hawaii.gov/hrscurrent/Vol03_Ch0121-0200D/HRS0134/HRS_0134-0027.htm

By treating ammunition the same as firearms, those state and local governments are asserting that the two are essentially the same in terms of public safety.

That treatment of ammunition in order to legislatively control the use of firearms proves that ammunition must be afforded the same 2A protections as the protected arms that use it.  If it walks like a duck ....

They can't apply the same limitations and restrictions on ammo as they do firearms and then argue that the Constitution doesn't include ammo.  That's having your cake and eating it, too.

But, then, this would not be the first time lawmakers created contradictions in the law.

That reminds me of an old HRA newsletter I have that said somebody got arrested after the gun show because of some loose rounds in the car.

I think it was about 30 years ago.

Not to be outdone, Washington state (where free people establish their legal residence) has proposed a bill to create a new 11% tax for the "PRIVILEGE" of buying and using firearm ammunition.

Hawaii wouldn't do this.  It violates our rights according to the 2nd Amendment.  Hawaii would never do this.  Never.  Never.  Ever.

Some dealers here keep records of ammo purchases. If they pass a tax law they can also make it retroactive. Put that down your barrel and smoke it!!! :wtf:

Fyi, that used to be a federal requirement. The feds did away with that requirement as part of the paperwork reduction act.

Yes they have. I can vote there.
I will bitch at my representatives about this.
I can also drive to Idaho and get what ever ammo I want.

In NC, we had restrictions on fireworks, yet right across the SC border were fireworks stands and stores -- go figure.

Around major holidays, the NC State Highway Patrol would set up checkpoints and have cars where they can watch the stores.

If they saw a car or truck drive into SC, stop at one of the fireworks stands, then turn around and come back into NC, they'd stop the driver and give them a ticket for their crime and confiscate the illegal contraband.

I would not be surprised if traffic cams and checkpoints were set up between Washington and neighboring states to watch for "shoppers."

Often, just the presence of the checkpoints -- normally labeled DUI checkpoints to keep people celebrating the holiday safe -- would deter most from trying to sneak fireworks into the state.

I might be wrong, but it wouldn't shock me if they tried, at least in the first couple of years until they realize it's futile.

The chatter I'm hearing says that some sort of major disrupting event is planned for March. If that's true then this accelerated attack on 2a might be a way of preemptively cutting off the flow of arms to the public. It doesn't matter if they eventually lose in court. All they need are a few more months.
