I befriended some people literally living out of their car.
One of them has mental problems but still very functional.
I talk to them almost every day.
Lawmakers come from all over the U.S. so it makes sense that they have sleeping facilities at their office.

In the early days of the government, federal officials were supposed to be in DC for no more than a couple of months.

The rest of the time they returned home to work their farms/businesses and actually live and learn around their constituents.

The jobs of Representative and Senator were never supposed to be full-time, nor were their duties expected to take longer than is needed to pass a budget and affirm nominees.

It's ironic that they now sit in their DC offices most of the year, yet it seems they can't get anything done -- including a budget.

I think that is a better argument for judges than for congressmen though. Does their work warrant more pay? I don't know but they shouldn't play the victim card either. Pretty sure I have seen other government positions that pay much more despite being much lower status though

I don't personally think we need to increase the pay of congressmen. At their current level of pay I would much more prefer the stick than the carrot to keep them honest

That’s at the basic rate. I think it’s a better comparison to look at how much a GS-15 step 10 makes in the D.C. area… $191,900, because of locality pay. They’d make even more if it weren’t for a rule limiting the maximum GS pay to level IV of the executive schedule. The lowest rate of pay for the Senior Executive Service is $180,000 for 2024, and goes as high as $246,400.
