Did Native Hawaiians support it though?
You'll often hear it said that an overwhelming majority of Hawaiians supported statehood; this is a lie.
600,000 people in Hawai'i at the time of the vote for statehood. Only 190,000 authorized registered voters, of which ~170,000 voted for statehood. None of those people were Native Hawaiians or generational locals, given that citizens of a territory are not allowed to vote.
MLK was against how minorities in Africa dictated the policies and governments of the continent, so kind of hilarious he supported statehood without considering the opinions and perspectives of the indigenous people of Hawai'i.
"There is no generally accepted definition of Indigenous peoples, although in the 21st century the focus has been on self-identification."
No such thing as "Native" Hawaiians, Am I a native Californian
because I was born there to parents that traveled from another part of the country?
No, I don't consider myself a native of anywhere, I am an American citizen. That is it.
As a tribe Hawaiians do have a gripe against the people that overthrew
their tribal government or Kingdom as it were. So dig them up and kill them again.
Personally I hope Hawaiians put together a Monarchy, move to
their designated "Homelands", set up casinos, and make some money
so they aren't so poor.
Reality is Hawaiians can't take back everything and evict everybody else.
That isn't going to happen. What can happen, is for Hawaiians to set up like many
mainland Indian nations have done, and prosper, or be stubborn and not deal with reality.
