Good to know.  I will be on Oahu for a week in early March and feel so much safer already.
Happily living in Puna

Possibly self-defense.  Depends on the argument.

"It was inside this establishment that police say an argument started. During the argument, police say the three men started to physically assault the suspect. During the alleged assault the suspect pulled a knife and started stabbing the three men."

Yikes
I used to work across the street, literally.
I had to drive through that area a week ago.
It was kind of creepy. It's the Korean bar area.

There was  stabbing in Waipahu a year or so back, woman came home and caught her guy in bed with another chick, both were asleep. She grabs a knife and stabs them both, but they luckily had no life-threatening injuries. I asked a cop friend about it yesterday and he said the prosecutor didn't even go after her, they just dropped it. Can anyone verify? Justice system is broken, a good reason to add to my testimony on the next AWB bill.

That sounds a lot like this story.

Quote
Court documents said Guzman entered the male victim’s bedroom when he was in there
with the female victim and “began attacking the male victim with a kitchen knife, causing
him to sustain lacerations to his head and left arm.”

Guzman did not live with her ex-boyfriend at the time of the alleged attack and the male
victim said he had been in “an intimate relationship with Guzman for two years and do not
have any children in common,” according to court documents.

When the male victim was arguing with Guzman, his female friend tried to break up the fight
after waking up to hearing them argue.

If that's the case, then according to the story, she was charged.

Quote
The woman accused of stabbing her ex-boyfriend and his friend on Saturday, July 9,
was charged with attempted murder on Monday.
...
Her bail was set to $750,000. Her next court date has not yet been set.
The reasonable man adapts himself to the world;
the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself.
Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man.

Considered a crime of passion and used as a defense.  That the instant shock and rage caused them to not be of sound mind and there was no premeditation involved, so not murder.

Not sure if "crime of passion" is still a thing now.

Aloha Spirit notwithstanding, violence will continue.  In the land of Aloha.  Where politicians drum up laws that are easy to pass but does nothing to fix society.

Oh, but Logan said crime is down.

That sounds a lot like this story...

Thanks for that, I was pretty surprised when my friend said that-- but it was believable, considering that happened in that case about the Big Island security guard getting beaten.
