The same day Honolulu police were addressing smash-and-grab concerns, the legislature was hearing testimony on a bill preventing police from arresting people for misdemeanor and petty crimes.

Bill 1601 was heard on Thursday, Feb. 22, and as it was written would have police cite for a misdemeanor, petty misdemeanor or violation, not arrest.
HPD addresses increased concerns over ‘smash-and-grab’ at businesses

“The bill, right now anything under $750 that is stolen is a misdemeanor so a lot of these [crimes] would just be citations,” explained Tina Yamaki, president of Retail Merchants of Hawaii.

She said local stores have lost millions over the years from theft and Forbes magazine even ranked Hawaii number four in retail theft in the country.

“Bills like this just encourage more theft,” Yamaki said. “It’s in favor of the thieves they know there’s no consequences.”

Schizophrenic government tells me that the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing.
Poor leadership. Like the do-do on the desk incident. Obviously, somebody doesn't like management decisions.

The Aloha Spirit can be mis-used in the hands of stupid, greedy, self-serving politicians who forget or don't understand what the oath of office entails.

When they took it.  It's not something you just raise your hand and say just for the hell of it.

Looks like Hawaii will mirror NYNY, Chicago, and Newsome's Commie Hell if not already.

And to Tina Yamaki, your clients will be leaving soon.  And your Retail Association will cease to exist.

There's a myth that shoplifting and other retail robberies are "nonviolent, property only" crimes, and unless the value exceeds felony status, people are being taught "No big deal.  That's why the stores have insurance."   :wtf:

Store clerks are being trained to turn a blind eye to theft in progress under the theory that it's safer for employees and customers to just let the thieves grab their loot and leave peacefully.

However, Walgreens, In&Out Burger and many other stores are closing their locations in areas being robbed multiple times daily citing the threat to employee safety.

So, which is it?  Not a crime of violence, or too risky to remain open?

Mixed signals as usual.

There was a Blue Bloods episode last week where Officer Edie Jenko witnesses a kid grabbing electronic merchandise and shoving it in his backpack.  When she tried to alert the clerk, she said they were instructed to not interfere with shoplifters for their safety.

So, Jenko arrested the kid herself, but was ordered by her commander to release him -- which she did when the mother arrived.  Mom said this was an escalating problem, but without consequences, she doesn't know how to get him to stop.  Really?  Mom needs to learn the word discipline!

Anyway, the next time it happened, Jenko put the kid in a cell next to the DA investigator, Anthony, posing as a criminal -- a "scared straight" tactic.  He was threatened with juvenile detention center sentencing since the value of his haul was over $1,000.  After seeing what going through the system was like, the kid decided it wasn't worth the reward.

I wonder if our political leaders would think differently if these asshat criminals would steal $750 of crap from their residences.

Every. Fckn. Day.

And twice on Sunday.

Easy to think up Kumbaya crap doctrine when it doesn't affect them and they spend other people's tax money like water.

Other people's tax money?

Where have you been?  The government views a part of your earnings as THEIR MONEY, which is why they make employers send them their portion before you ever see it.

This is why legislators have such a hard time dealing with surplus revenue.  By law, that money should be returned to the tax payers.  In reality, they find ways to keep it and spend it -- because it's "theirs".

I for one think the so called aloha spirit nowadays is nothing more than a pile of dung and an excuse to justify this banana republik’s soft on crime attitude….

Some of the dung ended up on HPD manager's and supervisor's desks.

I guess the Aloha Spirit has an expiration date.  People can only take so much "aloha".

Oh and Logan said crime is down.
