H1/H2 Merge
« on: March 06, 2024, 06:09:13 AM »
Was just wondering.  And I have been wondering for years.  And years.

Was this merge an engineering f*ck up?

This merge has got to be the most goddamn dangerous merge in all of the world.  It's amazing that there aren't more collisions there.

But I believe there are near misses every second of the day.

From a novice perspective, who the hell engineers a f*ckn merge on a freeway?

By the way, years ago my friend got into a collision there.  It was a major one.  He needed to be cut out of the vehicle.  He still has spine, back, and hip issues to this day.

Would love to hear y'all thoughts.

============
same guys that engineered the moving stadium design

I bet a lot of guys don't even know that the stadium was SUPPOSED to move to different shapes, but broke down.

I've always held the opinion that the roads were designed over a few cases of beer, and the streets were all named by Kindergarteners and toddlers.

I give HI a pass in some cases due to the terrain here.  Sometimes, the environment creates constraints that are not easily or affordably overcome.  No mainland construction companies are going to bid on these road projects -- too expensive to bring or obtain equipment and workers.  Also, without guaranteed follow-on work, the companies would never recoup their investment.  All of that to say the local construction companies get a monopoly, and we get whatever they give us for the price the bureaucrats decide -- union wages, of course.

I often marvel at how utterly flawless the stretch of road between the airport and the stadium continues to be while pretty much everywhere else on the island the roads in many places are borderline undrivable.

I understand the roads that were first created in the 1800s and unable to be improved due to buildings, land ownership, etc.

What i don't understand is how H1/H2 has all that land it sits on, and the traffic patterns are just ridiculous.  They have a ramp that takes westbound traffic from H1 to Farrington.  Why can't they have another fly-over ramp to take westbound/northbound traffic to H2?  That would give them the entire underneath to figure out a better solution for the H1 through traffic -- pretty much a straight shot without all the merging in and out.

They actually made things more insane when they added the entrance and exit for the zipper lane.

Maybe they can fix this first, then tackle the Middle Street merge that's always backed up?

How about the H1 on ramp westbound from University? That acceleration lane is about 2 feet long. Your car needs to accelerate 0-60 in 2 seconds. :rofl:

Maybe a racer designed this one.

I was thinking about this also.  Must have been designed back in the 1800's for horse and buggy.

i almost rear ended a DUAL MOTOR tesla (the suv like one) yesterday
he got on the eastbound one at university and took it slow as i was going to the exit in the right lane
i know he/she could have gone faster, but they didn't...

I always thought that when they were building the H2 to join with the H1 as they got close they realized that nomo room..... :o

They said "Oh sh*t....." :-\

Then one of them said "Ass ok, just merge 'um." :D

From that moment on, near collisions happens daily.  Even though the lanes have solid no pass lines with arrows clearly indicating that a merge is necessary at a minimum 55 mph. :o

Why?  Because Aloha Spirit ::)

1.  They feel entitled so you wait because they no can.  they dunno how to slow down. (see #4).
2.  Tourist from the mainland in rental car: all of a sudden, WTF???!!!
3.  Clueless and texting
4.  Flunked driver's ed.  Nomo license. (garan ball barans nomo insurance....)
5.  A combination of above or all of above.

In Hawaii a single solid line means "NO lane change"

A DOUBLE solid line means "change lane FASTER"

It's called either a Model Y or Model X. Focus.

Wouldn't that be "EnVy" vs. "jealous?"
