Looking at the HiFiCo website forums, EVERYTHING is "new".

I haven't read MOST of what is written (either on this website, or in the World) and NONE of it is "new"

You've been a 2aHawaii member since 2020, and you're just now noticing the "New" icons?

Forums for decades have used "New" as a tag for unread items.  Whether or not you think it's stupid, it is what it is.
