My youngest may be moving out of the house in a year.   So I’m considering keeping a secured firearm in the bedroom when the last kid is gone.   Right now all I have is a flashlight and pepper spray.

My wife is somewhat familiar with semi auto shotguns due to trap.  I got them for trap…not HD….so only the moss 930 can take a mount for a light.

We have a 38 special revolver.   I’m thinking that might work…..simple…. Just pull the trigger.   But can’t mount a light

We also have two 9mm ar’s, various 556/7.62x39 ar’s and various 9mm pistols that have lights.

But for some reason, I keep considering the revolver

Maybe the revolver for her and an ar-9 for me??  Or a cz P-07 for me?

I’m not keen on a regular ar….in case I forget to use ear pro…..I’m old and my hearing isn’t the greatest…I don’t want to lose a lot more if I forget ear pro

How does a revolver for her  and a cz p-07 with a light…both with iwb holsters sound? 

Will still have the pepper spray and would use that first.

We also have 2 dogs in our enclosed lanai ….next to the only usable door ….and they have access to the entire yard

Or just stay with pepper spray??   It’s all I’ve had for decades……and a machete….

in my dresser drawer I have a LCR 38sp and a Security Six 357.  both are loaded with 38sp+p hornady defensive ammo. use a hand held flashlight with these revolvers. this is my 1st line of defense
also have a 1911 with light and loaded with 45acp speer gold dot ammo.  2nd line of defense
also have AR ready to go with light and defensive ammo.  3rd line of defense when shit gets real 

You and your wife use what ever you're comfortable with and accurate.  Remember, every missed shot is a potential lawsuit.

Some say that their pistol is only there so they can get to their rifle.

In my XP, let your wife choose what she wants to use, then go with her to practice with it. Compared to you tell her what to use and she may not want to practice with it. THis would also include a new gun if she wants one.

There was a mag lawsuit in CA that the husband was fighting the bad guys and the wife showed up with the pistol. She ran out of ammo (revolver, so 6 shots on average).  Husband died. This was pre Bruen.

The machete would come out as an incentive if they dont want to leave after the pepper spray/gel

And finally the handguns would come out as a bigger incentive

Im thinking the realistic odds of someone sticking around after getting sprayed and seeing a machete and handgun are almost zero.  And them getting thru 10 9mm HPs and 6 38 special HPs to still face a manong with a machete.  I’m thinking they will likely leave at  that point.

I’m thinking I’m more likely to die from a kid texting while driving than a meth head getting thru my 2dogs/my locked door/pepper gel/9mm HP/38 HP/manong with a machete to kill me???

Unless they have a dead wish or doing suicide by home owner

In my opinion .....

Adults at home are more likely to need a firearm during the day.  Thieves like to target homes where it looks like everyone is at school and/or work.  Even home invasions are more likely then.  Fewer people in the area equals less resistance or witnesses.

Even if the Sun has set, you still have a lot of time before the lights are off. This is to say you might be counting on needing a weapon light more than is likely.  You probably want to keep a handheld light by your bed anyway for safety, so that to me is the light to use if you're checking out suspicious noises.  Remember the rules of gun safety?  Pointing a weapon-mounted light at someone is breaking at least one of them.  God forbid you get startled while it's pointed at a non-threat and cause a negligent discharge.

If I heard a noise from my dark bedroom, i'd be turning on lights as i walk through to see what's going on and to identify the intruder if there is one.  I'd rather scare a burglar away with lights than have to confront them alone (might be multiple).  The best way to win a fight is to avoid it altogether.

I think the best handgun choice is the one both of you are comfortable operating under stress.  Having said that, one thing to factor into that equation is firepower.  Revolvers with 5, 6 or 7 rounds are normally sufficient, but what if it's not?  Maybe a 10+1 handgun is a better choice, along with a spare mag or two.

i'd recommend a fast open handgun safe for when you're not in the same room with the gun.  It'll deter at least casual thieves (cable guy, carpenter, etc.) without interfering too much with access.  It's also a good idea if you have grandkids or nieces and nephews visiting frequently.

I keep a weapon light attached with 10+1 AND a handheld light next to my fast action safe.  I also keep some rather large folding knives upstairs and down as a failsafe.

Things to think about.

What if the intruder has a weapon say a gun. What if there are more than 1. The average home invasion in HI is by 2 people.  You assume that once they get hit with the spray, they are unarmed and want to leave.

I know a guy who's home was being broken into by removing the gelousies. The homeowner had a WML on his AR and shined the light at the guy removing the gelousies. This didn't stop him from removing them. So the homeowner then pointed the WML at the ceiling to also illuminate the rifle.  This the bad guy saw the rifle and then ran away.

So just because you have a gun, doesn't mean you have to fire it.  If the bad guy sees your gun and still comes at you, then that means he's motivated and wants to harm you guys and you will be glad you had the firearm as 1st draft choice.

Say you spray the 1 person and he does have a knife. Now he's blind and doesn't know how to leave your home. So now he's making slashing motions in a panic due to being blind.  Is he in your bedroom when this happens?  Or is he in the living room?  Replace knife with a gun and now he's popping off rounds while blinded.  Add in his friends who were in the other room now come to his aid.

There are thousands of what if's that can happen.

In the end, it's up to you.

The other plaintiffs in the CA lawsuit all ran out of ammo. 1 was in a bathrobe and had only 10 rounds and no spare mag. Over 60 holes were found in the home where the gunfight took place. Which means bad guys had more than 10rd mags and spares.

The other plantiff also ran out of ammo, but wasn't in a bathrobe. Mags were in another room. The plantiff was wounded by the bad guys.  This is why I keep mags in every room. 

Then add in the guy who died that I mentioned above about the revolver and running out of ammo.

what revolver and light do you have?

I do have pepper spray that I will use to spray and get away. but in my house, I'm already backed into a corner and probably can't get away. if I can't get away and the intruder keeps moving forward then I will proceed to the following:
if there is a home invader in my house that I did not invite into my house, odds are they ain't there to sell me girl scout cookies
I'll give them verbal warning they got 1 second to turn around and run. if they don't, they gonna wish they did

WML vs. handheld obviously involves trade-offs. WML lets you put both hands on the gun, but handheld gives more options.

One option with a WML is point it up at the ceiling and activate… the light disperses through the room remarkably well, provided your light produces a reasonable amount of lumens.  Clearly a different story if you’re outside, but that seems pretty unlikely in a home defense situation.

I don't do it here in Hawaii as all my guns are in WA state, But I kept a Browning 12 Ga. Auto five by the bed
most of my life.
I took it out of he safe at bed time and put it back as I dressed for work.
I recently inherited a Model 1897 slam fire Winchester 12 Ga.  Germans in WW I
hated that gun in trench warfare because you can make a mess in tight quarters very quickly.
Beauty of shotguns is they are accurate even when you are half asleep.
Minimal wall penetration outside the home.
you can do head shots, arms and legs. very easily if body armor is a problem.
