With covid lockdowns being over and unemployment income state and federal done, why are so many places needing workers?  Below are my speculations:

1) People learned how to live within their means.  As in a multi-person household cut back during covid, so they don't need that 2nd job to pay the extra bills.

2) College students are doing more online classes, which means they don't have to move to X state and get a college job for spending money. Instead, they're staying at home.

3) Trumps stricter enforcement from 2016-2020 on illegals, which was part of the menial job market is having an impact.  These are the cooks, dishwashers, retail workers, etc...

4) For non entry level jobs, I've noticed that employers are being very picky.  Example: Certain state departments wait until they get 15 applicant's before they start the selection process.  This means it can be 6 months before they even start calling people back. In the mean time, the applicant's already found a job.  Other departments require the applicant to take a 2 hour in person test.  The pay sucks, the benefits suck, so for someone to go thru this doesn't have many options. Unless they really want to be in the industry and pay/benefits don't matter. So good applicant's won't waste their time doing this 2 hour exam.

5) Or am I wrong and UI is still being collected 4 years after covid began, and there's no enforcement of someone having to find a job?  I remember when covid first hit, a car salesman I knew of was making more not working than when he was working. This is when the state paid and so did the feds pay UI. This went on for about a year. IDK if he ever went back to selling cars.

I've talk to 1 restaurant who has 3 locations. They had to close 2 due to lack of staff. In the news, there's a new hotpot place that is short 50 staffers. Owner was going to have family and friends work.  Companies who I do business with, many are short staff too (white collar jobs).

I've even noticed this when we went to Vegas multiple times last year. Restaurants were very short staffed.  Dealers at a few casino's as well (NYNY had no craps table open due to no staff).

I don't intend to spend hours googling this. So if someone wants to post their thoughts, XP or what they learned, go for it.

2. My son and his wife moved to Vegas but telework to Hawaii.
3. My daughter quit work today. She is moving away in 2 weeks and stated that she will not be returning due to high cost of living.

That's good for them to get out of HI. I don't see HI changing ever. But sucks for grandpa not being able to see grandchildren or children when ever.

Also, 2 gun buddies retired and moved to TN.
Another 2 gun buddies moved to TX.
A whole segment of in laws and nieces moved to Vegas, Utah and Washington state.
Two other nieces moved to the east coast.

I am entirely retired. I am done with being responsible for the irresponsibles now in the work place.
I had a few offers to come back to work but every day that I am working means one less day for me.
I spend my time helping friends and relatives with home and car repairs. This is enough activity to
keep me from rusting.

No idea. On a side note excess deaths are way up as well as disability claims.

I dunno how unemployment insurance works now, but an article at the start of the year said employers would schedule 30 job interviews and only one or two show up.  I assume UI is limitless nowadays.

Also a lot of working age people are moving to the mainland.  Though it doesn't explain why workers are short across the nation.

There have been several HI state jobs i've heard of where the incumbent gave ample notice to hire and train a replacement, but the supervisors failed to act in a timely manner.

What happened is they waited for the  person to retire, then they REHIRED the same person under a contractor position to continue doing the job and train their replacement when one is hired.

So, the retiree is getting a bump in pay to continue working past retirement, s/he's also getting retirement benefits, and the state has to still pay for a new replacement who overlaps with the retiree.

Talk about wasting taxes.  I'm sure if the retiree is willing, he's making big bucks for that time.  But, there's no justification for failing to hire a replacement in time to have a trained employee ready to do the job.

Probably not corruption.
It's a technique used to streamline operating efficiency.
If the remaining employees can manage operating without someone, then it increases profit. It means that the remaining workers have to work smarter or harder. The other factor is leveraging technology to replace the retiree.

When I retired, the replacement lasted 2 weeks.
The next replacement lasted a few months.
 
I stopped worrying about them after a while.
Getting too old.
Not my problem any more.
