“I take full responsibility for the security lapse,” she said in the email to staff Tuesday.
“In light of recent events, it is with a heavy heart that I have made the difficult decision
to step down as your director.”
Cheatle’s resignation comes a day after appeared before a congressional committee
and was berated for hours by both Democrats and Republicans for the security failures.
She called the attempt on Trump’s life the Secret Service’s “most significant operational
failure” in decades and said she took full responsibility for the security lapses, but she
angered lawmakers by failing to answer specific questions about the investigation.
At the hearing Monday, Cheatle remained defiant that she was the “right person” to
lead the Secret Service, even as she said she took responsibility the security failures.
When Republican Rep. Nancy Mace suggested Cheatle begin drafting her resignation
letter from the hearing room, Cheatle responded, “No, thank you.”
If you only read the beginning of the write-up, you'd get the impression she's doing the only honorable thing, and that she was completely humble and contrite in her feelings toward failing to protect Trump.
The reality captured in the second part of the article is very different from that first impression.
In the hearing, she was told by both (D) and (R) House members that they don't know why she didn't come to the hearing with her resignation letter in hand. Some even requested the Chairman give the transcript of the hearing to the appropriate people and have it reviewed for possible perjury charges, because none of her answers were informative and often contradictory.
i think after the hearing, she realized her consistent comments over 3-4 hours that she intended to remain in the job just wasn't possible. She only resigned after the hearing tore her a new one.
Glad she's gone, but i think she's just another agency director who thought as a Democrat she was untouchable.
Goodbye and good riddance. I hope the next director is not a Democrat Swamp Critter -- or a Critter from any party -- but rather one who takes the job more seriously than having a 30% female secret service by 2030 (30x30 goal).
The list of agencies at all levels of government is quite long. Maybe this failure will slow that down, as it's becoming all too obvious that selecting law enforcement personnel for field work should be based on ability, not gender. How many men have been passed over for employment in order to meet this arbitrary quota?
