I have been thinking of getting a .22lr for my youngest to shoot at koko head for a while now and honestly, they have been bugging me about it too. We’ll be on the mainland next week for a sports trip and so I thought picking something up after they finish all their games might be a fun reward. Unfortunately , my most recent PTA probably expired in ‘21 or ‘22. Will this be a problem when I bringing it in to HPD as an out of state registration?
If you're buying from an FFL, they'll likely ask to see your permit when you show them your HI ID.
You haven't given yourself much time to get your permit renewed.
One workaround is to have the rifle shipped by the seller to a HI FFL. They will hold it until your permit is ready.
Another option is finding an FFL or secondhand seller where you're going who doesn't worry about out of state purchasers.
Which state do you intend to be in when you purchase? Might find someone here who knows a gun dealer that doesn't require you to show a permit.
As far as registration goes, if it's an out of state registration, they won't care when you bought it, so I'd keep the receipt to myself. All they need is your ID, valid long gun permit, and the firearm for inspection. Depending on your travel dates, you could apply for the PTA before leaving and have the permit ready as soon as you get back.
