improving runout
« on: August 10, 2024, 09:16:56 AM »
I bought this used RCBS case gauge and have been chasing runout. I am not sure that it makes a large difference on tarrget in relation to bullet runout but I was having as much as .005" runout at the ogive. My SR still shoots within MOA and I can clean the rapids. My process reloading 223 is: decap, wet tumble, anneal necks, resize, prime, powder charge, bullet seat and small crimp on a Dillon 550. All my dies are Lee (pake das Y).
I found that raising the expander/decapping pin improves case runout. I'll see if it improve bullet runout as well.

Well, I took 5 of the worst cartridges with runouts from .010 to .006 and shot a 3/4 MOA group at 100 yards. The load was 77 SMKs on top of ARCOMP and standard CCI primers.

Just wondering if you were still tracking case runout as well as bullet runout and/or if there is a relationship between the two.

what if you measure it and mark it so you can clock it, before and after sizing and seating. maybe even firing?

Yes. Indicating and indexing it would be too much work. Trashing the brass or just shooting it
