Are you really ready for a disaster?
« on: September 30, 2024, 09:26:46 AM »
There's a youtuber I watch "CrazyRussianHacker".  He reviews mainly survival things like MRE's, survival kits, generators, all things either SHTF related or camping related.  And sometimes he does random knicknacks you can buy on ebay/etsy.

He lives in Florida and was affected by the hurricane.  He posted on his FB due to using someone's hotspot that he's running low on food and water.  English is his 2nd language, so maybe he meant the people are cause he should have lots of preps.  But also, he has 2 husky's, wife, child , and a bird. So it's unknown until he clarifies.

But this brings me to this post. Are your preps still good if your home is under knee deep or any depth of water. MRE's, freeze dried food in mylar bags, canned goods, etc... would be fine. But any wood or charcoal stored will be unusable, so you won't be able to boil water. A portable propane stove or regular one will be usable, once you dry it off to boil water. And MRE's can be eaten without boiled water.  I mean, you could eat the freeze dried stuff, just pour water in and let if soak for an hour or more. I know a few hunters who do that cause they don't want to lug a stove around. Ounces=pounds.

His water supply should be fine as it's water tight. Or he could mean that his roof blew off or his walls got knocked in so all his preps are not only underwater, but under debris, so he cannot access them.

We saw with Hurricane Katrina, peoples 1st floor under water and 2nd floor relatively OK. Can you survive on your roof, with the constant sun coming at you. Do you have a canopy you can put up that provides shade?  Or will you just go to a red cross center if that happens and hope they have enough supplies. But we saw with Katrina that the Saints foodball stadium wasn't the safest as gangs were taking over certain parts. Are you CCWing or have a gun in your BOB and the nearest shelter is a school. Now federal gun free school zone applies. Will you be thinking about that when your home is all bus up? Now also add in HI's sensitive places law/ordinance.

All the SHTF and TEOTWAWKI vloggers fail to address how to best get rid of the body(ies).

In a Katrina type situation what sucks is the government is still more or less in control.  And being this is Hawaii be prepared for extreme retardedness on their behalf.

In my opinion, even in a Katrina type situation, I wouldn't worry too much about the sensitive places law/ordnance.

His FB post:

"As you know I live right outside of Asheville NC I have lived in and around the area since I moved to the US. The devastation that I have witnessed since Thursday is heartbreaking. I truly still cannot believe what is happening. My family is safe as we have evacuated. I know that I am known as the MRE and gadget guy. But I will tell you survival mode is really hard with 5 dogs. And 3 small children 2 of which are in diapers. When we evacuated we divided all of our supplies between my wife's family, my family, and our neighborhood. Since we had place to go we figured we'd be better off not clogging up the system of people that need resources. My neighbors/ family and many of my friends still have no power and no connection whatsoever to the outside world. I still have friends that I am waiting to hear back from that they are ok. If you wish to help. Something that is very personal to me is my daughter's school. It is the absolute brightest spot in our lives. Every morning my daughter asks if she is going to school today. She says, "if I be really good can I please go to school." For us to get back to whatever normal is it would be waiting in the car pool to pick up my daughter. Thank You for your prayers. I will continue to support my community every way that I can."

I usually catch this guy's podcast(?) on my drive into work. It is short so usually lasts til the h3. He opens with the General happenings in NC and it strikes me that the govt does not work for us any longer ger for pick your reason. Fema is broke? How does that happen when you print your own money?  750$ for their inconvenience, are they getting the Maui treatment?  We should probably send Isreal and Ukraine some more money.
National guard not activated and local 'law' enforcement preventing people helping others?  I dunno,  this state being a blue one would probably get more help if in the same position. I guess it's an election year.

I sort of used to be but I got complacent.
- gave my 3800w generator to my BIL cause my kids moved their dogs into my covered lanai
- my plan to be like a Mormon and have a 1 year supply of food fell off the wagon
- I haven’t tried to harden my single wall home

I hope to get back on the wagon in 2025-2026 when I retire from my current job and hope to get a government job.

But I first have to help my kid buy a house.

I have to read up on the most current best way to keep the roof of my single wall house from sailing off.   My coworker said he heard of people setting 55 gallon barrels in their yards, putting a steel cable in it and fill with concrete and then run rope chris / cross across the roof.

You can always strap down your house. Keep tie down points in ground and just roll up.the straps when not in use.

There is some sort of system where you cable your roof to anchors in the ground but I haven't found someone who does it here yet. The tie downs would work too but the thing about my yard is that it is full of boulders and might be hard to drill deep enough. v

I would like to take you up on that one but it is hard to justify. I just don't do precision shooting that often and I only shoot at 100yards. Maybe if my vision gets worse I will need to though!

I'd be interested in what anchors he used.

I've seen that being used in more hurricane/typhoon regions.  That said, many also have "better" building technology in often hard hit areas like Okinawa and Guam.

We use similar ground anchors when camping and they are easy to use/setup if you have an impact wrench.

Focus

Tin foil doesn't protect against water. It's for the radio waves, xray, thermal, directed energy, and mind reading waves.

If the incoming storms produce even a minor disaster by mainland standards, remember:

Hawaii people, for the most part, are clueless when it comes to survival, perseverance, and thriving through adversity.

So 50% of my condo will be out of power for about 5 days.  But those units affected do have running water and hot water is sparingly.  Elevators to the affected floors also work.

Seen many people bringing in coolers and lanterns.  At least our amenity deck is open 24 hours so people can charge things, work, watch movies from laptops, etc...

A battery powered generator could run a fridge in a situtation like this.  I was looking into getting a Jackery one some years ago, but didn't want to spend $3500.
