I think sad and sympathetic are being used as click bait.

His sympathy is for the people in the Democrat Party who really want to see positive change in the country but keep getting nominees selected by the political machine that runs the party.  Just look at the last 2 primaries the Democrats completely controlled and overrode to get their preferred candidate nominated.

His sadness is for the decent potential candidates who were not selected by the machine because they either didn't tow the party line or didn't fit the criteria they believed would make them more electable to a voter base that values race and gender.

These are not quotes, but rather my impression of what he was trying to express in the interview.
