Registering a pre-'68 gun without a serial number? (Maui specifically) (Read 1362 times)

I'm looking at old cheap shotguns, some of which are pre-1968 and don't have serial numbers.

I've heard and read two things: A. the police department will require a number to be engraved onto the gun, or B. the gun gets registered as a "pre-1968".

Does it currently work in either of those two ways? This would be for Maui in particular but would be interesting to know how it's done elsewhere as well.

Should I buy an old $100 single-shot shotgun to see what happens myself when I try to register a gun with no serial number?

(I'd love to but the problem is a $100 shotgun tends to cost $250 by the time I get it shipped and pay a transfer fee.)

(Behold the ghost gun, the scourge of the world.)

Guns registered without a serial number will require a serial number be stamped or engraved onto the gun.
"If the firearm has no serial number, the registration number shall be entered in the space provided for the serial number, and the registration number shall be engraved upon the receiver portion of the firearm before registration."

Being pre 1968 doesn't change anything. You don't have to register muzzle loaders or guns from before 1899.
