Obama to "Quickly" handle gun issue...

"An Obama administration official said the president plans to push for immigration reform this January. The official, who spoke about legislative plans only on condition of anonymity, said that coming standoffs over deficit reduction are unlikely to drain momentum from other priorities. The White House plans to push forward quickly, not just on immigration reform but gun control laws as well," reports the Huffington Post.

I fear he may lay out an executive order in an attempt to avoid congress all together. Just as he has done with the immigration reforms.

he's been pledging to take quick action daily for weeks.

its another smokescreen guys, Obama's just going to do what he usually does.  nothing.

the fact that he appointed Biden to a research committee only shows his commitment...to putting off the issue a little longer.

Obama's that last person im worried about.  worry about congress instead.

that's a whole lot of words to say essentially nothing.

i know everyone thinks that obama is the biggest gun grabber there is, but every thing he seems to be doing seems to be a whole lot of side stepping the issue and ignoring it.  not that's he's doing it in our best interests, but whether on purpose or not, nothing he's doing ATM is hurting us.

Feinstein, Degette and local legislators are still our primary concern, imo.

to me, this just goes back to what a friend in the Marshals service told me.  he heard from a few people involved in DC politics on the side that Obama's target for "strong action" was to mandate background checks on all transfers instead of just store purchases.  which is essentially just a measure that doesnt change much at all (especially not for hawaii people who have to register everything anyways), makes anti gunners feel better, and is probably the most likely of all the options on the table (the AWB, the magazine ban, and this) to actually reduce crime.

of course, my source has as much credibility as anyone else, which is to say none, because there hasnt been any official word on it from biden, or Obama, who seems to evade any questions with more vague, broad responses that amount to a whole lot of fluff.  we'll see what happens.  as it is, the house and senate bills remain much more of my concern.

I agree, not much substance to the article.  Just another piece to make you go, "Hmm, I wonder what's actually going to come of this?"

In my personal opinion, I feel that this "fight" may get dragged out over the course of several months, with lots of back and forth between the House and the Senate.  I don't think that they really want to do something draconian because it will probably put a bunch of seats in jeopardy.  Regardless of whether this is Obama's 2nd term, I just don't think that many congressional seats want to risk not getting re-elected.  Aside from a Sandy Hook #2 resulting in a knee-jerk executive order (or economic collapse resulting in large scale civil unrest), I see something along the lines of what you stated.  I think it's past the point of "confiscation," as there are just too many firearms in the system as it is.

Personally, I can deal with a large capacity mag ban.  10 rnd max sucks, but I'd take that over another AWB.  I'd accept mandatory background checks and/or waiting periods, as we deal with that already.  But to try to pass something a la Illinois Modern Weapons Ban is just ludicrous.  Ridiculous to even attempt an idiotic proposal such as that.  That just down right chafes me.

i agree.

in fact, i think that might be exactly why Obama's being shy about this whole affair.  im sure many of these politicians remember 1994, and looking to the future, the dems have the senate, and i dont think they want to to see a possible scenario where democratic senators in gun states like montana and arkansas lose their seats and majority, and then we see a republican come in next tern to the presidency with both the house and the senate on his side.  and frankly, i dont want that either.  i dont like the idea of having everyone on one side.  too easy to abuse power.

that's probably one of the biggest things in the backs of politicians minds.  they saw how the democrats got tossed after the original AWB.  do they really believe strongly enough in gun control to risk their seats?  i'd venture a guess that most dont, since the AWB is a sham anyways.

This is something I thought of, too.  Obama wants a legacy.  If they pass some bullshit AWB, the Democrats will get tossed out on their asses again.  That'll leave Obama with a Republican House and Senate for his last two years, and it'll be hard for even the mainstream media to spin him as this great uniter when the Republicans are constantly tossing approved budgets that reduce the deficit on his desk, only to have them vetoed.

OH CRAP! I know it might go this way.......
taking a vague quote and applying leaps of logic to them isnt a good way to get your information.

I remember that speech.....
Politicians break so many campaign promises and Obama has lied so often, nobody even batters an eye anymore. Seems it's ok for Dems to break promises but remember how much the liberal media hammered Bush for the "Read My Lips, No New Taxes" promise. Just saying, Obama lies so much, it pretty much goes unnoticed.

I really think you've got it backwards.  Aside from the usual suspects who have been given a nation-wide stage to squawk about their usual BS, and some lip service from Democrats and wayward Republicans (who walked back their lip service pretty quickly), Congress doesn't concern me.  It's what Barraka Hussein is going to do to "alleviate the gridlock in Congress" that concerns me.  About half the country already thinks the solution to our problems would be at hand if only Dear Leader would declare himself dictator and disband Congress, so what's going to happen when the Boy King's "common sense, holistic approach to violence" doesn't gain any traction in either chamber?

honestly nothing, because many people dont care about the shooting or gun control at this point.

they waited too long, and people are swiftly shifting their focus to other things.

just my thoughts.

Many people were saying just that and Joe has a short news conference today and gun ban talk is back on every news network is full force, and I believe people do care on both sides of the fence and have very strong views, especially when it involves our constitutional rights.

it will last a couple days at most.  as the tragedy fades away, so will anything but small flares of activity on the media fronts.

when i say many dont care, i mean the vast majority of people who are in the middle of the debate, who arent invested into gun control (ie not donating to the brady campaign and whatnot) or arent gun owners who care.

Report says he went to a sporting goods store to purchase another rifle. Reporter said he was denied because there was a waiting period and conn. has stricter gun laws.

No report saying he was denied because of his current mental health disorders.
