I wonder if North Korea is laughing or planning........
« on: December 03, 2024, 12:12:16 PM »
Lots of news on the internet at this moment.  South Korea's president declared martial law on his country, stating there are communist sympathizers in the opposing party.

Brave citizens guarded the gates and fought with soldiers as parliament members scaled the closed fences to cast their vote to veto the martial law.

They were successful.  Though short lived, this event is troubling.

I won't post any articles as all one has to do is go on-line and the news are all over the place.

North Korea didn't plan the martial law order by South Korea's president.  But they already made known their 3-day invasion plans of South Korea.

It's a detailed day by day plan that they weren't afraid to make public.  They are that confident.

Hence the title of the thread.  Maybe they are just laughing at the sheer chaos that is happening to their neighbor or are they planning to take advantage of the situation.

The most interesting pic was of a SF soldiers NVG on the ground. He gonna be fucked.  But at least the group won't be on lockdown until they're found.

Conscription in South Korea has existed since 1957 and requires male citizens
between the ages of 18 and 35 to perform compulsory military service.[1][2]
Women are not required to perform military service, but they may voluntarily
join the military.[3]

i saw some messed up behaviora in the time I spent in the Korean command center at Osan AB.  The military are mostly non-volunteers.  They do their time to fulfill the mandatory enlistment, and then move on with their lives.  Their entire mindset is, "I'm going to do what I'm told to do -- no more, no less."

One example: I watched as the Korean soldiers assigned to monitor air operations pressed "print" on their computer screens every single time an aircraft's status or other data changed.  Someone told them to capture the information as it gets updated, and that's what they did.

They went through the entire 3-week supply of perforated high-speed printer paper the first day!  We had to add laser printers next to the workstations they used that didn't require perforated 132-character wide paper so they could keep killing more trees unnecessarily.

We had to source a paper tape punch plus a spare then engineer a driver for it to run on the Sun OS workstations.  The Air Tasking Order (ATO) was transmitted either via SIPRNet, or through a direct radio network connection from the workstation, to every non-Korean unit participating in the exercise.  The formatted message, ATOCONF, was received by remote Sun workstations for them to view, copy and print as needed.  The Koreans communicated with their troops over radio exclusively, and none of the remote units had workstations to connect to the IP or radio networks directly.  So when the ATO was approved for release, the Korean soldier in the server room would print it to the paper tape punch -- the tape looks like what came out of a ticker tape machine people used to watch for stock market updates..  He would rapidly wrap the tape around his thumb and pinky in a figure-8, then run it down the hall to the radio room.  The ATO was then fed into a paper tape reader and transmitted to whomever was to receive it.  I don't think I want to know what happened next!

We also had to install 5-1/4" floppy drives attached to some of the Sun workstations, because their PC's did not have 3-1/2" floppy drives.

The US was restricted from installing anything at the command center that "forced" the Koreans to upgrade anything they were using.

Even if we could demonstrate a better way of doing things with a simple procedure change, we were told to keep our mouths shut.  The cooperation agreements were very strict, and anything we changed, anything at all, could be construed as breaking that agreement.

It's not shocking that South Korean soldiers are doing something that appears wrong or not smart.  That's how they do things.  Soldiers do what they are told -- nothing more, nothing less.

It was a joke. The background is in the US military, if sensitive items go missing (stuff with a serial number that's assigned), then no one can leave the base until it's found. It's not uncommon for the unit to be on a few days to a few weeks lockdown.  Nevermind that the person who lost it is also in trouble, but the entire unit suffers.  Items such as NVG, weapons, ACOGs, lasers, etc...No exceptions, if you're getting married, too bad. If you have to attend your parents funeral, too bad.  It also isn't uncommon for them to be eating MRE's as no one can leave the area and sometimes chow isn't delivered.

But an event like the above, protester's were in contact with the soldiers, so to have something break off isn't as bad. This is why also things are often tied down. Even ACOG's with paracord.  Maybe S. Korea hasn't learned this as they aren't in a war like how we were (OIF).

There was also the A-stan fuck up withdrawal. Military members were told to leave everything behind. And those who got out later (DD214), didn't have them to turn in.  They were charged for said items.

This South Korean President must watch a lot of K-Dramas.

Koreans are such passionate people.

He's gonna get impeached.  He'll have a lot of time for K-Dramas after that.

Esp after their politicians voted 190-0 to undo the martial law activation.  It wasn't even a close split.

Notice the president canceled the martial law proclamation as soon as he saw the vote was going to override him.

You can't override me!  I withdrew the order before you could!!

Does S. Korea have free speech like how the US has? People were arrested for covid protest in England, do you call their PM a wannabe dictator?  Journalist arrested as well (freedom of press).

When you post based on feelings and not facts, the above statements are made.

And there will be lots of fake news and misinformation once Trumps administration starts.

Plenty of this crap for him to feed on.  And ease his pain.

The President has the power to declare martial law in times of emergency.

The Parliament has the power to veto the President with the required number of votes if they do not agree with an action the president has taken.

How exactly was the president a wannabe dictator?  Looks like the democratic government of South Korea worked as designed.

Officially, South Korea is the Republic of Korea (ROK).

Quote
The South Korean government's structure is determined by the Constitution
of the Republic of Korea. Like many democratic states,[145] South Korea
has a government divided into three branches: executive, judicial, and legislative.
The executive and legislative branches operate primarily at the national level,
although various ministries in the executive branch also carry out local functions.
The judicial branch operates at both the national and local levels. Local
governments are semi-autonomous and contain executive and legislative bodies
of their own. South Korea is a constitutional democracy.

Been watching reports as to the justification for martial law.

Hard to support such a radical decision, unless you think it's true that Communists have infiltrated the Parliament and other government agencies who are attacking the country's safety and security from within.

I think US officials and citizens might have a similar reaction if a Congressional agenda involved dismantling the Constitutional structures of our nation by implementing Socialist and Communist beliefs.  Kind of like having 400 AOC's making the laws and using the Green New Deal as a blueprint.
