Just need a new hunters ed card for long arm PTA right??
« on: March 02, 2025, 03:51:57 PM »
One of the guys at my work place was telling me that getting a new HE card does not qualify for a PTA for a longarm.

He said the “new” handgun affidavit (training includes suicide/mental health/domestic abuse??) is needed for PTA for a longarm.

When I read the hpd requirements it seems like the HE card is enough to get a PTA for a longarm but the HE card can’t be > 4 years old

I’m wondering if the HPD site is not up to date or did my coworker miss understand something

I’ll call/email Suzy at HPD too

Requirements changed back, no expiration date on hunters education for a long gun permit.

So those that have old hunters ed can still use it to acquire long guns still?

Thanks Zippz!

That is crazy to change something and back track.   It’s like the change wasn’t thought out and done on a whim.

Like the new suicide/mental health info we now have to listen to.   Seems like a waste of money and time….still have to get cleared by our doctor to get a permit

also curious about when that happened.  I thought it was "enshrined in law"?    I guess I wasn't paying attention.

any particular reason why it changed back?  I mean, they don't do something that benefits us, for no reason, never, ever.  I wonder what the motivation was...

Your correct. Handgun ed is enough for long gun/ shotgun PA. I actually went this morning to renew my long gun permit before it expires. Well they told me to get all the forms to fill out. And come back with the forms and my hunters ed or handgun ed affidavit 14 days before my permit expires. I just have no clue why have to be 14 days. So basically that’s in 2 weeks from now. Before the count down of 14 days start. I’m soo confused. Why couldn’t they just do it like the following day when I bring back all paper work?

Sen Wakai added it in to an unrelated weapons bill last year.  Probably a constituant complained about it.

As I understand it, we aren't allowed to have 2 unexpired PTAs.  Because it takes 14-days for a new PTA, at the time of pickup, the existing one will have expired.

Confirmed.

I went to HPD today and renewed my LG permit with my old Hunter Education card.  Had my recent handgun safety course affidavit just in case, but not needed.

Again - for long gun permits only.

Yes. HRS 134-2(m)(1), which became effective on May 13, 2024, says that if you have a Hunter's Ed certificate which is valid for life, which Hawaii's certificates are, then that satisfies the long gun/shotgun permitting requirement.

I just passed the online course for Hawaii Hunter card.  The card supposed to be mailed to me in 1-3 weeks but can I use the .pdf they send me as the online certificate to get my long gun PTA or do i need the actual card they send?

I haven't been able to get through the infinite loop system of hpd firearms phone line.  To verify about the old hunters ed card being eligible for long permit.  Any idea how to get through

if Zippz says so, then that's the word.

don't waste your time in the infinite loop wormhole.  you'll only get ... older.
