I took advantage of SIG's free voluntary P320 trigger upgrade. The original trigger was manufactured from a more solid piece of metal, the weight of which contributed to the drop-fire problem. Inertia drove the trigger back enough to fire IF it landed on the back of the slide with sufficient force.
I believe the new trigger being thinner and lighter weight prevents that problem, however I think they only fixed this one symptom and not the real design flaw.
When I was at Front Sight training, one exercise was for tactical mag changes with a "no shoot" decision. We fired 2 rounds, ejected the mag, inserted another mag, squeezed the trigger to just past the end of the take-up, then "decided" there was no longer any threat. We then released tension on the trigger. The take-up part of that exercise was to be ready to continue shooting if necessary.
There is so little travel on the P320 trigger that the take-up is almost nonexistent. I wound up sending a round down range all 3 times I ran the exercise even though I was not supposed to. The instructors are watching to make sure all the elements of the exercise are completed including the take-up. Knowing what i know now, i would never put any pressure on the trigger until I'm ready to fire.
The P320 trigger's sensitivity reminds me of most single action revolvers i've owned. I never let my finger rest on the trigger with the hammer cocked. Until I've decided to fire I don't touch the trigger.
In my nonprofessional opinion, if SIG changed the trigger to add a take-up similar to a Glock or other semi-auto pistols, I think the drop-firing problem would be 100% solved as well as the "hair trigger" issue I've seen. The inertia needed to cause a trigger to travel past some amount of take-up plus still fire would be more than just causing it to fire.
Just my experience and opinion.
