Not new.  This is from 6 years ago.

BTW, that killer was identified because a close relative sent in their own DNA.  That means no matter how careful you are, a family member can add themselves to the database and enable law enforcement to track you down.

Apparently, when you send your DNA sample into a genealogy company, it's considered discarded on your behalf -- as in you relinquished your DNA from your personal control.

I imagine it's like a tissue or soda can you threw in the trash, only more specific to it being an actual DNA sample you voluntarily gave up.
