Is there still a problem with Kaiser?

Hello. I haven't bought and registered a firearm in years. Is there still a problem with having Kaiser when applying for a permit? Thank you for your time.

Is there a different problem you're asking about besides Kaiser not responding to HPD's medical record request?

I've had Kaiser since moving here in 1993.  Never had a problem getting a Permit to Acquire in over 30 purchases.

From what I've seen recently, Kaiser-related issues still come up occasionally, but it's much less of a concern than it used to be. As long as you don't have disqualifying mental health holds or disclosures, most applications go through without problems. You might want to check with the county issuing office directly since some policies vary slightly. Good luck with your permit!

In the past, if an administrative worker at Kaiser found any information in a patient's record loosely or directly related to mental health, such as counseling for weight loss surgery, they might report that to HPD as I'm sure the request is just as ambiguous as HPD's guidelines for denials.  As a matter of routine, the permit would be denied until you provided a letter from a doctor stating you are no longer impacted by the mental health issues in your record -- that you are "safe" to own and use a firearm.  So, you had to get a doctor saying you are basically cured of something you probably was never diagnosed with or treated for.

The HI statute was changed saying you have to have/have had an actual mental health issue before being denied a permit, not for something as irrelevant as seeking counseling or other services that had nothing to do with fitness to own a firearm.
Quote
§134-7 Ownership, possession, or control prohibited, when; penalty.
(c) No person shall own, possess, or control any firearm or ammunition if the person:

(1) Is or has been under treatment or counseling for addiction to, abuse of, or dependence upon any dangerous, harmful, or detrimental drug, intoxicating compound as defined in section 712-1240, or intoxicating liquor;

(2) Has been acquitted of a crime on the grounds of mental disease, disorder, or defect pursuant to section 704-411 or any similar provision under federal law, or the law of another state, a United States territory, or the District of Columbia;

(3) Is or has been diagnosed with or treated for a medical, behavioral, psychological, emotional, or mental condition or disorder that causes or is likely to cause impairment in judgment, perception, or impulse control to an extent that presents an unreasonable risk to public health, safety, or welfare if the person were in possession or control of a firearm; or

I believe the important change is the wording "Is or has been diagnosed with or treated for."  So, unless your mental health appointments fall under that description, you ought to be safe to apply for a permit without paying an outside-the-network doctor to write a fabricated letter about your nonexistent mental health diagnosis and/or treatment.
