Is this a temporary situation?

I would think anything longer than a year, and it stops being a foster home situation.  The dog becomes part of the new family.

it's really hard to give back a dog you took care of for a long time.

It was supposed to be a week, but now it's uncertain. I'll try to get a more definite answer

Not to put you to a lot of trouble, but do you have any info on the dog?  Like male/female, house-broken, indoor/outdoor, owner provides food, ....  stuff like that?

Update: this is what I got from old coworker
....
Anyway, Joe, the owner, has turned himself in to pay his debt to society.
It was unclear how much time he will need to serve. Initially it was only 2-3 days to possibly a week.  My good friend Doug, volunteered to take him till August 12th.
But due to cancellations his badly needed surgery has been moved up 2 weeks. This leaves me having to find a foster home and potential forever home for this little, loving canine.
So, if you’re open to providing a safe,
loving space in your life, whether temporary or longer, give me a shout out.
“Bento” is small, quiet, smart, potty trained, playful and very well behaved. Everything you’d want in a tiny dog. He’d make a great ESA. I would keep him myself if my work life wasn’t so complicated or if my lease allowed pets. There is a time limit.
Need to find him a home by Saturday
And, if Joe is in longer than a month,
“Zeke” can be adopted perminantly.
I’m doing what i can to avoid the last resort, the Humane Society.
What, Me Worry?

As long as he doesn’t have behavioral issues he should be okay at the humane society. If they growl or snap during the intake process they put them down pretty quickly though. There are also plenty of other smaller organizations on the island. Everyone is pretty maxed out however since people are returning all the dogs that they picked up during the lockdowns.

I don't seriously expect anybody in this forum to adopt this doggy. ....But you never know.

I  would have done this without hesitation a few years ago.  However, I'm in at a point where I need to sell my house, and I can't predict where my next home will be -- more than likely on the mainland since retiring in Hawaii would be too expensive for me.  I'm sure I will need temporary dwellings until I settle down somewhere, and having a pet will significantly limit my options.

Timing is everything.   :shaka:

Better hurry up with your home sale and take what you can get.

Try a news search for Real Estate Crash and check out the headlines. It's 2008 vibes out there.
