has anyone been pulled over with their CCW?
« on: November 03, 2025, 12:14:12 PM »
I was wondering if any of you have been pulled over with your CCW? I want to hear how your interaction went.  Since CCW is relatively new in Hawaii I'm curious to hear how the local cops handle what could be a tense situation - luckily our cops here are laid back compared to the mainland so I'm guessing they handle these situations well.

I got pulled over recently for expired safety check by a sheriff, but I did not have my gun that day so my interaction was brief and normal - I thought he was going to ask if I had my firearm with me (assuming LE can see my CCW info on their laptop), but he didn't .  Maybe sheriffs cant see HPD's CCW data?

Two local law enforcement agencies not sharing their data with each other?

That's just crazy talk!   :geekdanc:

The closest I got was going through a DUI roadblock while carrying. I wasn’t too worried since I don’t drive or CCW if I have any alcohol at all. But I definitely was a little puckered/heart beating faster thinking in my head how it would go, and exactly what to say if they made me pull over and have a long interaction. But they just asked where I was coming from and I said dinner at my grandma’s and that I was taking my 2 toddler children home to bed. They just waved me through without asking another question.

We can all imagine a nightmare scenario unfolding after we inform the officer we’re carrying.

Primarily I suppose it’s due to the fact that none of US know what THEIR protocol is in this situation - I.e. they ask to see the card & location of the gun, ask you to unload and make safe during the interaction - or what?

Who wants to show your gun to a cop????

It would really reduce a lot of stress around this if there were someone in the know to let us know what their protocol is.

Oh I see, not saying.

Oh c’mon, give your pals a break here.

We’re just looking to grease the wheels of firearm interaction  so everyone goes home happy  :D

Last time I showed my little .380 Ruger the female cop at HPD saig "OMG it's so cute!!"  Then she showed my smol pewpew to the rest of the cops in the registration area.
Fricken love that little Ruger though, cant shame me about it lol..  If a cop asked to see it at a traffic stop he may just laugh at me and send me on my way.

Well, all I can say is you’re way the hell smarter than I am about carrying - comfort-wise!

I’m walking around with an N-frame S&W revolver in my pants.  I love em, but not without some cost …

I don't have a CCW but if I did have one and was stopped by an officer, when asked for Driver's license and registration I would hand over my CCW card also.

Then watch them jump 10 feet in the air, draw their weapon and yell "Out of the car with hands up you f*ckn puke of a criminal!!!!!"

 ;) ;) ;)

I mean, dis is hawaii, right?

The Honolulu ordinance states you need to disclose the location of the firearm and that you're carrying one and present your CCW IMMEDIATLY.

State law says you just have to inform the officer your carrying. But only if requested by the cop, do you have to disclose it's location and present your CCW.

Failure to do any of the above and if you get charged, you lose your 2A right in Hawaii for 20 years.

Makes you wonder, if you forgot your CCW permit at home, is it in ones best interest to state any of the above?  you're rolling the dice of the officer your interacting with if they let you go and don't log it into any report or their note pad. But then there's bodycam...

You have to do more than that. Read my post above.

Thanks - knew the part about having to disclose and present the card up front (it’s in the affidavit you sign).

”(v) The requirement to disclose information regarding the carrying of a firearm when stopped by law enforcement;”

https://www.honolulupd.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/License-to-Carry-a-Firearm-Affidavit-of-Acknowledgement.pdf

However was wondering what if anything comes after that, on their side, with respect to their protocol - maybe nothing?

I guess time will tell, as nobody here is inclined to even if they know.

Can't beat the LCP MAX for ultra concealability and comfort, but it's really the last gun I would want to have in a actual gunfight.  At 25 yards all I'm shooting are hopes and prayers.  I don't really go out at night but I carry bigger pistols for higher risk times/areas - those Waipahu gas stations can get pretty sketchy with all sorts of tweekers

How about if are pocket CCing a non lethal device that's gun shaped but deploys pepper spray?

Do non/less-lethal devices need to be disclosed as well? I assume not unless the officer asks about my "third wallet"

For more context as it applies to me, my device contains exactly the amount of pepper gel I am legally allowed to carry without a permit.
Just in case though, I did previously apply for a separate pepper spray permit from the PD back in 2021 before the local laws changed.

Nobody has questioned me about my "third wallet" as of yet and I go in and out of places all the time with it, even post offices
and the bank.

All other tools aren't required by law to be disclosed. I haven't looked into what you linked, so IDK the legality of it.
