When you fail to empower those to take care of themselves, the masses will grow to the point where govt. can't provide for everyone.

Fail to empower? That's a talking point offered by a smug upper class twit uttered in disdain from a corporate news office before retiring to his gated community for a weekend of golf and yachting. The reality on the ground is much different.

I wish I could remember the source of this quote/sentiment/observation:

Pure democracies are doomed to failure from the moment the majority discovers that it can vote largesse for themselves out of the public coffers.

That's why we're supposed to be a representative republic, not a democracy.

The trouble is that our "representatives" have voted their own largesse and made their jobs such juicy plums that they seek re-election by promising more largesse to the masses.

We no longer have "citizen-politicians."  We have politician-politicians.

It should not be such a desireable career choice... or for that matter, a career at all.

I do believe that the radical and crazy notion that the Founders meant what they said, is gradually soaking through the judicial system.

My sentiment as well. Serve your country as a lawmaker then go back to being a citizen, let others have a chance to serve

I see nothing has changed in Detroit; it is increasing getting worst. I visit frequently only because I have family there and that is where I grew up. As a young child, I vividly recall the Detroit Riot like it was yesterday and feared the worst. My father stood guard with our doors and windows boarded up. Being a former Marine, he was well prepared for a war, so it seemed. He had an arsenal of weapons and ammunition and I don't think he sleep throughout the entire ordeal. Took the National Guard and 82nd Airborne to restore order after five days of total destruction and loss of human life. The closet thing to Martial Law I've ever witnessed in my lifetime.
