Midway USA ammo
« on: June 11, 2026, 05:32:01 AM »
Just got an email from midway USA. They will start shipping ammo to hawaii via UPS next day and 2nd day air.

Wonder if it will  be worth it though. It said there will be an hazmat fee passed along by UPS.

I got one too.  Just to test, I put a 10-round box of 12 ga. shotgun shells in my cart and went to check out.  The product was $26.99, shipping was $23.50, remote location surcharge was $20, shipping protection was $1.95, and hazmat charge was $45.  A total of $122.72 (with tax) for a $26.99 product.  They need you to upload a photo ID.  So yeah, it's super expensive, but I suppose it's an option if you're in a pinch.  I don't know how much the hazmat charge varies with weight, so maybe buying larger quantities might be more worth it.

And no, I didn't complete the order.  BTW, I didn't realize Midway's base ammo prices were so high.  Our local shops are much cheaper if they have what you want.

Was hoping this would apply to primers. However, I added some to my cart and tried to checkout but was told they do not ship these items to Hawaii. Oh well.

Primer's will never be allowed onto planes.  Ammo is relatively stable.  Primers go boom.

might only be worthwhile for ammo that's not stocked locally, low priced, and you buy in bulk.

Definitely nice to have the option to buy in bulk.

I've been on a quest to feed 16 gauge shotguns recently.

One case of Browning-brand16 gauge target ammo:
$245 (already nearly $1 per round, while the cheapest listing of the same ammo on AmmoSeek is around 80 cents per round)
$56 for shipping
$20 remote location surcharge
$5.39 shipping protection
$45 hazmat charge
$16.50 tax
Total: $387.83 ($1.55 per round)

TWO cases of Browning-brand 16 gauge target ammo:
$490
$85 for shipping
$20 remote location surcharge
$5.39 shipping protection
$45 hazmat charge
$28.78 tax
Total: $668.26 ($1.34 per round)

THREE cases of Browning-brand 16 gauge target ammo:
They won't ship it because it's over weight limit.

Probably a 50 pound weight limit? That takes the air out of bulk shotgun orders. But $1.34 is better than anything I can find local for 16 gauge, which is NOTHING.

At least it's nice to have the option.

Moral of the story is that the hazmat charge, shipping protection, and remote location surcharge are fixed. So it makes a ton more sense for rare rifle or pistol calibers.
10 boxes of 257 Weatherby Magnum:
$737.90
$44.50 for shipping
$20 remote location surcharge
$5.39 shipping protection
$45 hazmat charge
$38.13 tax
Total: $885.53 ($4.43 per round, whereas the lowest price for the same ammo on AmmoSeek is around $3.50 per round... Is any store in Hawaii is selling 257 Bee for $4.43 per round? (If so let me know because I'm considering buying a 257 Bee))

in comparison, last year I was in the market for some Gucci ammo.  Ammo Seek pointed me to Frisco Guns, TX.

I ordered 5 cases of ammo, to get the CONUS "Free Shipping", I forget what the threshold for FS was...
no tax, free lower-48 S&H, however, plus "fees" & insurance.
total shipped weight:  41 lbs for 5 cases

ammo freight forwarder, via truck/boat, including hazmat fees, etc:   $1.70/pound (at that time, can vary),  $69.70 for 41 lbs (actually, no weight limit)
freight forwarder delivery took about 4 weeks.

Frisco Guns advertised ammo price was $1.112 per-round, at the time (not including fees/ins).  Total, all-in landed-to-my-house ammo cost-per-round came out to $1.271 per-round.
so, that's the price we pay for living in Hawaii.

who is the ammo freight forwarder? only 7 lbs to get 41 lbs from the mainland doesn't sound too bad. I assume oahu only though?

I see kygunco is also shipping to HI like midway but they don't seem to have as high as prices. My friend just pre-ordered some of the peak+ 6.5 cm ammo. This new shipping policy will be helpful to find some of the boutique loads I can't always order from LGS.
