I had lunch today with some moderately leftist people. I got a chance to examine the new license. Even they wondered what the fuss was all about. I suspect the controversy was just bs to get Facebook clicks....which generates money for the people who start the controversy.

But then I just checked out the licenses from 50 states and they all kinda suck.
I'm guessing it's a combo of anti-counterfeit measures crossed with a humiliation ritual.

I agree it looks ugly, but it's at the bottom of my care list.  I can understand the Mayor's frustration but he should've handled it better.

The military has been using CAC cards for awhile.  The chip and magnetic stripe contain encrypted information unlocked by a private PIN set by each owner.  Included in that data on a similar card can be every bit of river's license information, finger/thumbprints, last 4-5 digits of a Social Security Number, a digital copy of the owner's photo, etc.

All that can be accessed by entering an 8 digit PIN and providing a thumbprint on a scanner and using an ICC or mag stripe reader.

Why do we have people trying to thwart counterfeiters with "50" individual anti-theft features on a tiny card?

Merchants, Cops and anyone else wanting to verify an ID could use a $5 card/stripe reader and a $10 thumbprint scanner to see if everything matches up.

I just recently re-newed my license and I probably won't see this ugly one till 2033.

Honestly I don't even look at the darned thing except when you gotta show it to the airline employees and TSA.

I found out I had to renew mine when taking my son to DMV for his license after a three month appointment wait.
He was told he was unable to take his road test because he was not accompanied by a licensed driver. 
Fortunately, civility, sympathy and compassion ruled the DMV crowd that day and after my open air soap box, everyone allowed me to jump ahead of them in line to renew my license restoring a small piece of my faith in humanity.
Totally embarrassed the kid but he was able to take his test.
