In this case, if she's convicted, she wouldn't be allowed firearms anyway since it's a felony.  By going to a therapist, she would in effect be banning herself from firearm possession just as the statute would have.  She would also be placing the therapist in a legal and ethical position of reporting her crimes if she's likely to continue.  Different process, same result.

The law can also prohibit owning or being around or working in a position were animals are present for up to 5 years, Getting psychiatric help, if it's effective, would make her safe around animals in the future. Simply prohibiting firearm possession would not.
