What shooting glasses do you wear?
« on: August 31, 2010, 11:54:45 AM »
I wear a pair of cheapy Walmart safety glasses I got for $5. I like that they were cheap and will protect my eyes, I just don't like that they fog up.

Does anyone know how to keep them from fogging up? For that matter, what shooting glasses do you wear?

Where I work I get issued Uvex clear safety glasses. I just use those. They don't really get fogged up too much unless it's super hot. If I feel like using some dark glasses I have a pair of Smith & Wesson brand safety shades. These I found on the Internet someplace. They cost a whopping $10 or so shipped.

These are the ones. Smoked lens.

Prob. find em cheaper if you shop around. I get em by the bulk, then if they get scratched up or lost, NBD, just bust open a new one.
I had some expensive RayBans, but they broke after a few months of use. Better for me to get the cheapies. Hehe

Since I'm blind as a bat I use my Rx glasses, but I recently got contact.  All I can say is Wow haha.  I use my old pair of sunglasses with contacts!  Is it true that yellow tint on glasses make better shooting glasses?  If your are looking for a place with a large selection of safety glasses, try Safety Systems Hawaii.  They are located in Kalihi right across from Red Line Auto parts.

Boas safety shades.  I searched 35 years to find the perfect sunglasses.  Boas come in about a dozen varieties including clear, yellow, grey, mirrored, gold, etc.  I wear them on my motorcycle because they fir perfectly and wrap around my eyes to keep the wind and insects out.  I wear them at the shooting range for most of the same reasons.  And I wear them as my daily wear sunglasses.  I pick them up at Cycle City for about $7/pair when I'm in Mapunapuna.

I am lucky with my current job, I am issued the three lens Oakley's, so yeah I use'm.  As for the foggin' problem, use the saliva of a very hungry Haole, worked for me for many years of diving and a couple of tours over there 8).  If that is not your speed go to a dive shop and get Anti-fog some brands are really good but check your lens manufacturer before applying.

I just use my Oakley's for now. Though I've been curious as to how the Rudy Projects are. Seems to be the newest craze.

If it's bright out then I'll wear my WileyXs...although I'm honestly not very impressed with them; but they were free so who am I to complain? Regarding the fogging issue, it's not something I've experienced here in Hawaii; overseas, definitely. The best bet in those situations is to keep all of your glass at the same temp as the outside; especially if you're up in the mountains and it's cold outside - ice on an optic is not a good thing. And like kaylor, if my stuff fogged up when going out into the heat from a nice/cozy room or vehicle, I went old school and used some saliva and water. But anti-fog probably will be in my pack on my next vacation.

Yellow lenses make everything appear more bright and have more contrast. I use yellow lenses in low-light (but not dark) conditions; and they are especially useful on cloudy days when everything has a blue hue.

I don't own any Rudys but if you're a USPSA member, you get a pretty nice discount on Rudys.

Update on the Rudy's:

Finally got my hands on a pair, used the USPSA member discount. The glasses were a little pricey but it's well worth it in my opinion. The frame itself is "bendable" so you can custom fit it to your own physique, as well as the nose piece. I have the photochromatic clear lens and they work extremely well. The clarity is exceptional and have no issues of fogging.

I'm a big fan of Oakley sun glasses for shooting. I have M-Frames and purchased some Flak Jackets on my own dime.
You can buy multiple lenses and swap to match lighting conditions.
The VR28 lenses are probably the best all round lenses for shooting, and offer great contrast in full and partial light.

Oakley Flak Jackets currently.  Ive got a ton of Oakley M Frames, Gascans, and Wiley X eye pro floating around the garage right now, probably buy new lenses and use them as stocking stuffers next year.

I have M-Frames and Half Jacket.  Both are great, I like the product oakley puts out.  I also like the price we get them for at US Standard Issue.
