Hunter Ed course (December)
« on: September 08, 2010, 07:40:00 PM »
Anyone else going December? I signed up me and gf and a friend to go. Wondering if anyone else is going or if anyone has any idea what goes on during those two days.

We've never ever hunted before. If that helps any.

I won't be going in December, but I have been to the class.

All it really is is two days of watching videos and learning in the class, and then taking a test. Just pay attention to what they say and you should be able to pass it easily. Oh yeah, the flora and fauna might not seem important, but it is a good thing to know :)

I keep meaning to take this too, but I have a hard time planning around something so far in advance.  I usually make vacation plans with far less lead time than is required to get into the Hunter's Ed class!

I went many years ago (over 10 IIRC). Never got around to go hunting. Hehe
Unless thing have changed, be prepared to be crammed into a tiny room with a bunch of folks for 2 days.

Freaking tell me about it. I made the reservation I think in July and we took up one of the last few slots left.

That's sort of what I'm afraid of too. I don't know anyone in the hunting community, nor do I have any skills I can utilize to help me along in this adventure. But we'll see how it goes! hehe.

I was told you can show up early and they will usually try to make room for everybody.  If you are unsure about this call up the DLNR and ask.

Even though I have taken the my pistol safety course, I still want to take advantage of the Hunter's Safety, too.  Why not?  The only issue is the time it takes but that's not so bad either.  But the bigger priority for me right now is First Aid/CPR courses.

hey I've also paid $200 or so for the handgun safety course. I signed up for the hunters ed so I have the option to hunt! Though I've never been before. This should be fun =Op

I went in December...2011. Class was fun, I liked looking at the animal pictures best.

The things I remember most are take safe shots, know where your buddies are at all times, and Mouflon sheep.

When I was younger I had lots of opportunities to hunt because an uncle on the Big Island always tried to teach me how. But I was like 6 years old and we failed the training. I vaguely remember starting with darts, someone threw one at me and hit me in the shoulder and that was the end. And unfortunately I've never really had a strong interest in hunting or firearms growing up. So now by the time I'm old enough to have some interest, my uncle is too old to hunt already.

I'm not that hungry for boar though, I ate tons of it growing up. I would only be interested to eat deer or sheep.

Wow, old thread!  lol

I ended up going about a year ago.  I just showed up early and got in line for standby, I didn't register.  I forget how early I went (at least a few hours) but the standby line was already pretty long!  People were just chillin on the ground along the walkway, eating, reading, zoning out with their ipods.  Yes the classes were PACKED!  You could hardly move in there.  They said they normally try to take everyone who shows up, so as long as you're not in the last 10-20 people, I think it's guaranteed you can get in on standby.  This time they had a particularly large number of people on standby.

I have gone hunting a few times since then, for sheep and deer on Lana'i.  Can't say the class really prepared me that well lol.  I mean, I certainly learned some important basics in safety, etiquette, and law.  I had no friggin idea what I was doing when I was cleaning and skinning my animals though.  Thankfully I was with hunters who walked me through it.  AND thankfully I was prepared with a razor sharp skinner.

^^^I don't even remember when I went.  GZ don't hunt, but GZ should butchered the hell out of the bird identification.
