Living in a Turd World

Hi Guys,

Living here in Hawaii is like living in a turd world.

Servo had a 30% off sale on stuff they sold.

So, I  bought the Wife a set of 4 Toyota 20" mag rims and misc accessories for her 2010 Tundra.

Did you know that Servco does not have 20" tires to fit and have to get them from Tire Rack on the mainland!!! And of course the prices they quoted me was out of this world.

Same thing for my Chevy TrailBlazer SS.  No one has 20"tires in the size I need.  Again, Servco said Tire Rack.

The only reason I went to Servco is because both vehicle have factory installed tire pressure sensors, and both vehicles were bought and are serviced there.

NO, we are not willing to go with some weird Off brand made in China tire.

Even Sam's Club has to special order 20" tires.

So where do people with Caddys, Lexus' and other high buck cars get their 20" tires?

Or are they running No Brand unknown name tires?

Rant Off

Servco sucks plain and simple. I bought a HHR SS from Waipahu. After getting the run around for an accessory I wanted on the new car, which was a $150 factory option, they tried to charge me $900. Then i had a strange noise start up (sounded like cv joints going bad). They kept the car for 4 days, only to tell me that noise was normal!   :wtf:  I never went back there and I never will! Biggest rip off. I do my own service and keep all receipts.
As for tires, try Goodyear. They usually stock 20", however they will not be cheap.  Also, be sure to let them know about the tire sensors, because an inexperienced tire thrower can break that guy in a heartbeat.
Been there done that.

Order from Tire Rack and have them drop shipped to your installer of choice. I've heard many good things about Hawaiian Tire & Auto in Aiea.

That's what I did.  You can get much better tires and the cost of shipping combined with the tires is about the same as what you'd pay buying off the shelf from a local seller.

20" tires for the vehilces I have are special order at Costco, Sam's and one Goodyear store I went to.

Plus prices quoted were unreal.

I just want reasonably priced tires and service with a warranty.

I do not want to Buy the store.......

Update,

Because we have a Type "B" Tundra, technically speaking it never came from Toyota with 20" mags.
Only the Type "C" came with 20" mags, as result, the Large box store we went to Can Not put tires that
do not match the load rating of the Type "B".  They can not find a 20" tire in their computer with the proper
load rating.
Plus there is the problem of the Tire Pressure Monitoring Sensors.  I'm not even going to try explaing that.

The TPMS problem, according to them started with Firestone/Bridgestone and under inflated tires on Fords haveing rollovers(Remember that HooHa?)

So, now I have to find a dealer who will have a Warranty on the tires and can switch the TPMSs from our present mags to the new mags and can reset them to the Tundra's onboard computer........

Not to mention, I am still trying to find reasonably priced tires for My Chevy TB SS......

Give me back the old days, if the rims fit the car and the tires fit the rims, I can run'em.

You should hear what the Wife has to say....  Nah, you don't want to know what she said.  She used to  run a Fork Lift in a factory that made street sweepers.  You might learn new words you never heard before.

Forget going to places like Costco and Sears, or even Tirerack. Go to someplace like AutoCustoms (at the old Eurosport) or even Revolution Motorsport.
Trust me, they are one of the better choices for those looking to find those aftermarket tires that are more affordable, yet pretty darn good.
I am willing to bet they will find the tires you need for your 20" wheels for your Tundra. Autocustoms did for mine, at nearly half the price that Tirerack quoted.
And they got it in one day. Autocustoms is behind the Hotdog place across the street from the Volvo dealership.

Well, I just learned more interesting tidbits Why OEM is Best.

    http://smith-wessonforum.com/lounge/164908-whats-up-car-manufacturers-their-wheel-bolt-patterns.html

If you read thru the Entire 4 pages, you get an idea why Factory OEM Rims(and tires) are more Safe.

Explains Why big box tire sales Will Not put on tire sizes not meeting OEM or better specs.

TPMS is more of a driver NOT paying attention to their tire pressure manually than a manufacturor problem.
Which is why vehicles costs more, some one has to pay for the TPM System

OG -- Dealers won't put on anything... that isn't OEM.  For special orders you should go to someplace like revolution motorsports.  Most dealers don't know shit about their own cars. Most mechanics in there are not ASE certified (It only takes one mechanic, in one discipline, to put the sign on your shops door.

Do you really think this "Police" officer is qualified to answer such technical engineering questions? I don't. I could almost guarantee he doesn't have a technical engineering degree.

Many aftermarket rims are MUCH better, most aftermarket components are MUCH better then that the stock OEM.  Cars are performance driven, people don't pay to downgrade (at least a smart person).

Essentially, your on a gun forum, talking cars.  Go to a motorhead forum, to speak motorhead =).  Big box only works deal for the most common sizes that they sell consitently. A place like Revolution Motorsports could probably find you tires.

Working on tires for the Tundra.  Need to save up $$, cost more than some of my guns.

Actually, given the number of cars and trucks that have been "modified" running around without Recon stickers, I would say that there are a lot
of numb nuts on the road.  Seems to me and the Wife that a lot of mods are Unsafe at Any speed.  Amazing that there aren't More crashes and fatalities.

Personally, I have seen the results of a catastrophic  aftermarket wheel failure.  Rim totally detached itself from hub.  Pickup with 7 persons
flew Over oncoming vehicle and ended up bellyup in a lava field.

Dealers that sell vehicles with NON OEM wheels and tires are opening themselves up for major legal problems IF something happens.
But then, the chances of defendant getting a really sharp automotive knowledgable lawyer, with an engineering background, here in Hawaii is 0.
Just because the aftermarket book says it fits, doesn't mean it's safe.
You can bet the factory will withdraw legal support if cause is determined to involve Non OEM installation by dealer.

Majority of people driving are totally unaware that black box in vehicle stores last few seconds of several vehicle settings prior to crash.
Computor results have been used in many lawsuits.   Which is Why Toyota is "reluctant" to release info in the brake recall situation.
For whatever reason, earlier this year, Toyota withdrew All Legal support to a Lexus dealer that sold a Lexus to a CHP officer.  He and his entire
family were killed in a traffic crash.   Involved brakes not working.........  Waiting to hear What/Why when it's all over.  Probably take years.
Just getting the data may require lots of legal wrangling to get manufacturor to release data........

rims are no longer a recon item...

as for black boxes....they are used to protect manuf from false lawsuits....even dealerships dont have access to decipher the black boxes...had one of the big boys from detroit come over to read a black box when a customer took a car out....crashed it ...and claimed the vehicle wouldnt stop....lawsuit again XXXXX motor company...its funny how they want to go away from throttle cables to electronic throttle bodies....

Should take a look at resources like car and driver, motorsports, and some of the import tuner magazines. Many OEM products function, but it's like getting a model home -- it can always use aftermarket upgrades.

Now, some upgrades, like the people lifting their trucks etc, or not doing everything professionally, lead to accidents or damage. Ford backs the Saleen, the steeda, boss mustangs.. they are all aftermarket.

There is a difference between just after market and Factory sponsered after market.
Used to be in the 60s and 70s Chevy, Ford and Chrysler were all into every kind of racing.
Race on Sunday, Sell on Monday.  Plus parts were flowing out of the racing programs to the street.
Other than crate motors, pretty hard to get the really good stuff anymore.

The kinds of stuff I'm talking about is what I see everyday.  Ricers with shit can mufflers, lowered to an inch off the ground, off size tires on rims past fender well.

Not to mention what is done to 4 X 4 trucks.  Lift kits high enough for me to walk under.  Extreme drive shaft angles, Waaay over size tires.

Very surprised that there aren't more Crashes and fatals involving those kinds of modified vehecles.

CD and R & T aren't what they were when they started out.  Article to look for in CD, "Macho Menace of the Freeways" and their "Boss Wagon" series to name 2.
A lot of the really good magazines were bought out by Peterson Publications, merged into their big main stream mags and killed off.  PV4 and Car Life are 2 that I liked.
