How do you guys keep your guns rust free?
« on: February 15, 2013, 10:25:56 PM »
Damn this constant Hawaiian humidity. I live in a non-air conditioned house and I'm really at my wits end with the rust that never stops attacking my firearms. I keep my guns well oiled and kept in gun cases with moisture absorbers with no effect. Does anybody have any tips on how to beat the Iron Oxide menace?

1) Most important is regular re-oiling. If you don't clean and oil regularly nothing else is going to work in the long run. Everything else reduces how often you have to re-oil.

2) I have one of these in my gun cabinet and recharge it regularly.

3) Don't keep anything in its case. The case will hold moisture against the weapon more than the air will.

4) If you aren't going to be shooting it for a while oil the snot out of it.

5) Get good at taking your weapons completely apart and putting them back together. Doing so regularly (not necessarily often) and cleaning/oiling each piece is the best defense against rust in places you never get to when you just field strip it for cleaning.

That's my technique so far. And so far, so good.

Oil.
and keep them out of the foam cases, they trap moisture. After I clean my rifle, I rub them down with a rag with gun oil.

disclaimer: I live in Ewa Beach. It's not as humid as the windward side.

I've seen posts about corrosionx and decided to try it out now.... They sell it at young guns and the guy said it was good stuff.... Some people use it on their fishing reels and boats, so it must be doing something right....

Desiccant packs might work...

I've heard of people using char coal in there safe...

I've seen those closable storage bags online that suppose to keep out air and moisture...

I oil the hell outta my guns. I don't have a gun safe however, so I'm a bit hesitant to just leave em out.
Thanks for the responses, ill look in to that corrosionx.

I've used a combination of LPS 3, gun socks and desiccant over the years with success

you could always buy a a/c for 100-150 bucks and be good to go...  just saying and it will make your room comfortable.  Too much eletricity?  Just buy a single solar pannel from revolusun or 2 from the other crappier brands and it will power your 5-12k btu a/c unit 24/7!  I keep my room at a comfortable 60 degrees year round and have never had  problem with rust here.

There's an article about this subject on the Hawaii Rifle Association web site:

They are recommended Rusty's Rags, which is  silicone infused sheepskin.  I picked one up at Young Guns and am trying it out.

The glock 21 I use for home defense I oil every so often and keep it in one of the anti corrosion red bags. All the other pistols I keep well oiled and in a case with foam padding (I know-not supposed to be good) but I keep the case in one of those space saver bags with the air vacuumed out. Same with my rifles; oiled, in the soft or hard cases, but in vacuum sealed xl bags. Been doing that for years with no issues so far, and I live in ola'a on the big island where everyone has an ark built on their property.

What is crazy, and I don't know if anyone else has this problem, I don't get rust but I get mold!!!  What the hell kind of extraterrestrial mold we got on the big island. I soak the guns in hoppes and oil and vacuum seal them in a bag for a few months, but when I open the case, there's a layer of mold on the foam padding and even rubber grips!!  I mean what the hell kind of mold can grow on non substrate organic and in such a chemically inhospitable environment?

But I guess I'll take the mold over the rust.

I would try the vacuum bag technique.

I use one of these in my safe. It's good because once it gets used up, I just plug in it and it renews itself. keeps the humidity around low 40

btw how often do you guys re-oil your guns?

WD40 is not good for a gun lubricant.

You shouldn't store your guns in the foam lined case.

my small handgun safe has foam liner on the bottom. I put a plastic sheet over it so the gun isn't touching the foam

Don't let your guns touch any foam stuff. They're giant sponges that suck in and retain moisture. Keeping your guns in a case is also bad because it doesn't allow the air to circulate.

I use a heating rod at the bottom of my gun cabinet with Damp Rid buckets and those blue bags from Corrosion Cops. They said those blue bags are what they use to store and ship military firearms to the guys in the field. You can also bury it or submerge in water with no problems. I think their store is in Waipahu but I just find them at the gun show. Haven't had any problems yet.

Also, dessicant packs in every ammo can, gun case, range bag pocket, etc. Overboard? Maybe. Corrosion/rust issues? Nope.

I keep my guns in sealed pelican cases with dessicant packs in each. Have not seen any rust issues yet... I also keep them wiped down with oil or silicon rags and be sure not to leave any un wiped fingerprints..

What should i do then, if i only have a hardcase lined with foam?  Granted, i dont have any rust.  Except, i AM starting to notice traces of it forming on my flash suppressor.  I'm not terrible worried about the recievers or the bolt, because those are coated and/or aluminum, but i am worried about my barrel.

should i get a soft case, and maybe hang it in my closet with a dehumidifier?  or put packs in the case i have?

I want to get a safe, but dont quite have the budget just yet.
