Is a 20rd mag for a SIG716 illegal?
« on: February 21, 2013, 10:34:06 PM »
My command is making a group buy through SIG and one of the rifles we are ordering is the SIG 716. Unfortunately Sig said they do not have a 10rd mag for that rifle and won’t be able to accommodate the order.  I am thinking the mag for the 716 is too large to fit any pistol and shouldn’t fall in the 10rd max category. If anyone has more knowledge regarding this, it would be greatly appreciated. I am hoping Sig can be convinced to ship with the 20 rd mag.

Its been discussed millions of times....no its not illegal since the mag does not fit a pistol.  In Hawaii there is no such thing as a AR PIstol.  Its considered an assault pistol which is no longer importable nor legal to own in Hawaii.

I could register a single shot AR-15 pistol.

We ran into the same problem with Bushmaster.  Just send them a link to HRS §134-8(c) and ask them to run it by their legal dept. The wording of the law is stupid, so in the end they'll likely approve the order because you're ordering rifles.

We're not talking about unicorns...the law has only been so since 1992. I got my AR pistol in 1989 and know a few others who have these legally owned/grandfathered "assault pistols" in Hawaii. So they do exist and HPD knows they're out there.

Your post sounds like you may be in the military.  If you are not planning on staying in Hawaii when you PCS out or retire, then I would say take advantage of the deal and keep the rifle for later if there are magazine problems.

I sent SIG an email earlier and just spoke with the sales rep, he is going to research it more and run it past his people.  Thanks for the help!
