October/November Shooting Match
« on: October 01, 2010, 03:31:31 PM »
Hello folks, and welcome to this months match.

Tom_G suggested that we should throw other types of firearms in the mix too. I think this is a good idea, so here is what I came up with.

This months theme will be bowling pins for 25 and 50 yards.

The 25 yard target will be shot with any handgun at the 25 yard mark.  Try to hit the pin five times with the least amount of shots. (I.E. if you miss keep shooting until you hit the pin five times)  The person with the least rounds expended for 5 hits is the winner.  Ties will be broken with number of hits to the top. (small portion of the bowling pin)  All shot must be completely inside the lines, any hits to the outlines is not to be counted.

Pistol 25 yard target...

For the 50 yard version we will be using any rimfire rifle at 50 yards (scope at 10 power or less)  One shot into each bowling pin with the least amount of rounds expended. Scoring will be the same as the handgun match. (must be inside the lines to count, and top hit count for tie breaking)

Rimfire 50 yard target...

Hope you guys like what I came up with, and as always I am open to suggestions, for this or any other match.

Thanks for playing and good shooting! :shaka:

Ah this sounds like a fun one.  It'll also be really easy to spot who's doing the 2aHawaii challenges at the range.  Great idea Heavies!

Hi All,

I may be able to compete on this one.  Just a question, this wouldn't be construed as a "humanoid" silhouette would it?

I'm not sure about that one.  Just looks like a bowling pin to me.  If anyone knows about that let me know.  We might have to chage it up.

I've shot bowling pin targets at the state ranges before as practice for the annual LIFE instructor competition.  No one ever complained.

Thank you for including pistols! I really hope I get my slide back from   Glock soon. I'm a poor shot so I probably won't win but this will make   me concentrate harder and thus, get better  :)

Just wondering, are there any gametypes for shotguns?

I too am lousy at shooting handguns. Doubt if I can hold a minute of a bowling pin. ;)
I know I am good enough to protect myself and family in an self defense situation.
My close range practice has been lacking though, since the shutdown of Waikiki Gun Shop.
We will definitly get smoked if any bullseye shooters decide to try. Hehe.
Very good excuse to practice. Mabe my target frames can last a little longer if I can get good!

As for shotgunners, any suggestions will be entertained. I don't own a shot gun and have not fired one for years, so I am not familiar with what to try for competition.
Let me know.

I made it out to the pistol range today, it was more crowded that I expected.  I was shooting a Smith & Wesson Model 15, 4in. barrel.  I shot the first pin with .38 sp wadcutters and did alright.  It took me 7 rounds to get 5 in the pin, one in the top.  My second pin was the winner though.  5 of 5 well in the pin, one in the top.  The second pin I used a mid range load, .38 SP 158 grain semi-wadcutters.

This was a fun challenge.  I am getting pretty confident with my Model 15, but I was surprised by my performance on the second pin.  I shot a 3rd pin for kicks, aiming all for the top, I think I got 2 of 6 and stopped lol.

Now the rifle bowling pins, that is gonna be really tough..

Anyone get out this weekend?  I haven't been able to get to the range so far.  I hope to try some Missouri Bullets 200 grn semi wad cutters in my colt for the handgun challenge. I don't know if I can do as well as mishka though but i'll try. ;D

I am going to try to get out tomorrow and a least shoot the rimfire.  I didn't get a chance to load any .45acp yet so I don't think I can shoot the pistol this weekend.  Hope you guys can get out too. :shaka:

Well, boogers.  I completely snafubared this.

1.  First, of course, I make it clear to WGS before I realize that I forgot to throw my target frames in the truck.  Sigh.  Back to town.

2.  For the pistol event, rather than take out one of my highly-accurate .22s, all of which have been sighted in for 50 yards, I decide to bring out my rolling-block .357, which I had sighted for 100.  When I get there, I realize I don't remember what ammo I had used to sight it in.  So I shoot groups with each of the 4 different loads I have in my ammo can.  The answer is, none of the above.  Crap.  And I only have like 1 box each, plus a few loose.  So, I pick a load, and commence sighting in.  But it does not go smoothly, and I end up using all of that ammo without getting a good zero.  Crap again.  Ok, pick another load, start over.  But I can NOT get a good group!  Which makes no sense... this gun is a tack driver.  Finally, halfway through the second box of ammo, it occurs to me to look at the front sight, which is rattling around loose.  CR-AP!  It takes a specialty tool to adjust, one which I didn't bring.  Ok, now I'm screwed.  Add by this time, it's 12:30.

3.  Fine.  Pack up, scurry over to the rifle side, put my name on the waiting list, then start ferrying gear up and down the hill.  In addition to the postal shoot, I have a new m1903 in need of a first date, and wanted to shoot some more groups thru my m1927.  So, .22 and .30-06 is the order of the day!

4.  Of course, when I do get a bench, it's 3 seconds after a cease fire is over.  So I break out the 1903 and shoot at the deer for a while.

5.  At the next cease fire, I run out and put up my target frame at 50 yards with the bowling pins on it.  No need to do any sighting in, because I brought my Mossberg.  That beautiful globe-sighted precision machine.  One problem, though... I literally can not see the targets from 50 yards without magnification.  Seriously, those little photocopied lines just disappeared.  I could kind of see the fat lines across the necks, but not nearly well enough to actually aim at one.  And, of course, I didn't bother to bring my scoped Marlin.  Again, Crap.

I'll be at a Boy Scout shoot all day next Saturday, so I probably won't get to try again this coming weekend.  Maybe the last weekend...

On the up side, I got some nice results from both my 1917 and new 1903!  I hadn't realized just how miraculous the sight on a 1903 is.  Calibrated from 100 to 3,000 yards!  And with your choice of notch or aperture rear sight for most of those distances.  Sexy as hell!
The difference between theory and reality is that, in theory, there is no difference between theory and reality.

How accurate is the 1903?
