Other Animal Meat
« on: February 27, 2013, 06:31:40 PM »
What is the big deal with Horse Meat?  Its all over the news lately.

Most of us here probably have eaten all kinds of "Meat"

I have had nearly everything, When I was living in Singapore (A long time ago) they had all kinds of exotic meats.  One of my first trips to Singapore my Aunt took me to Chinatown....she took me down this street.
I saw a lot of different animals in cages.  I told my aunt wow this must be the pet store area.  She told me no!  This is Dinner!

I think it has more to do with consumers not getting what they think they're getting, mislabeling issues and such. Honestly, I don't see what's so bad about eating horse meat. It's served as a regular item at French butcher shops and sashimi style in Japan (ref. Food Channel). Supposedly it's very lean and a lot better for you than beef or pork but it has a different taste which may or may not agree with some people.

People might also be bothered by it because horses have achieved a type of pet status in some countries/cultures.
What if rhinos are just fat unicorns?

Lets see, I've eaten rabbit, shark, frog, snails, elk, deer, wild boar, crocodile, ostrich, dog, pigeon, goat, sheep, buffalo, camel toe (all I can remember for now)

I'd eat horse too if I could find it for sale.

The ban on horse slaughter in the USA has been one of the greatest tragedies for horses in decades!  Because they can't be slaughtered humanely, countless horses have starved to death and abused in other ways.  In LA/california, people were releasing their unwanted horses into the aquaducts (those are the cement rivers they have in LA) and many could not get out and litterally starved to death in a horrible slow death and this is just one example!  If you have never seen this, you really dont understand how much suffering ban on horse slaughter has caused.

OT: There's an organization here on Oahu that rescues horses when their owners can no longer afford to support them.

Being a dedicated omnivore, I consider it my duty to eat pretty much every other animal on the planet.  Exceptions are granted on the basis of availability and toxicity, but not on cuteness.  I promise you, I would not go hungry if I were locked in a kitten farm!

I really, really don't understand why we don't raise more efficient forms of livestock in the US.  Rabbits and goats come to mind.  Cows and horses really are extravagantly wasteful food sources.  The amount of food and water it takes to raise a steak is mind-boggling.  You would think that simple economics would have pushed us in that direction already.

Of course, if efficiency and economics were the only governing forces, we'd all be vegetarians.  I suppose one must draw a line!

Growth hormones are found in lots of foods we eat. But, apparently horses intended for slaughter and human consumption are treated differently and are not allowed to receive certain medications deemed harmful to us along with some other regulatory things. I'm no farmer but I guess it's like cows intended for steak/burgers and milk cows?
