Big Island Gunsmiths?
« on: February 28, 2013, 09:12:52 PM »
A buddy of mine is looking at a Rossi levergun and wants to drill and tap it for a scope. Any recommendations for gunsmiths here on the Big Island? I do most of the small kine work myself so I've never looked.

Bryan Nakashima at Kona Reloads.

FWIW, the Rossi's are Winchester 92 clones and have an open top.  Rossi does sell some of them with a scout mount (on the barrel), 'cause anything on top of the receiver is going to interfere with ejection, but you'll need a long eye relief scope.  My Rossi has a tang mounted peep, which is plenty good enough for the limited range of the .45 Colt.

If you want to scope a lever gun, a Marlin 94 (with side ejection) is a way better choice.

Thanks, crazy cat.

Yup, I bought a Marlin for exactly that reason. My buddy wants a 16" barrel in 44 mag, though and likes the forward mounted scope. Given that a 16" Marlin is going to have to come from online somewhere and be outrageously expensive + shipping + FFL.... getting the Rossi drilled and tapped might still be less expensive overall.

I'll call Bryan at Kona Reloads. Thanks.

You can put a scout style scope on the front handgaurd area
