I got ya. Every now and then these threads come up. Maybe instead of fixing the rifle range it could be arranged and more action bays opened up.  These could be built by volunteers. I think it was mentioned before that was how the others were constructed. There's still lots of areas that could be turned into Acton bays, and it would look nice compared to the rest of the range and people could shoot there too as well. I hope/think.

Yeah. Looks like there's enough space for one more small bay to the makai side of the last bay. There's also area that groups have volunteered to clear for more parking. A smaller area was weed whacked or mowed in preparation for the shooting sports fair last year and that helped with parking a lot.

The City was also supposed to start watering the action bays to help grass grow and keep some of the dust/dirt down, but haven't seen much of that yet.

I would like to see longer target distances. 100 yrd and a couple of 200 yrd target holes just ain't cutting it it would be nice to set a target pass 600yrd

I would personally like to see more targets at the range.  The steel targets are pretty beat up and you along with a bunch of others on the line are shooting at the same thing at the same time.  More steel targets and better hours.

It is my understanding that the steel plates beyond the 100 yard berm (anywhere from 230 ish to 450ish) are "private" targets, in that people put them up on their own.  That the range tolerates them, but they don't necessarily want a whole bunch of them out there.  I asked an RO about it one time and the one that I talked to said that "technically steel targets aren't allowed beyond the berm that that the official range is supposed to be limited to 100 yards" (or something like that).  I asked him because I was thinking of putting out new steel plates or replacing the ones on the rack that had been shot up.  He told me not to put out any more.  That was just one RO and I am not sure if what he said is the official policy.

I do enjoy shooting the steel out there.  Yeah, it is a free for all and there are a bunch of people shooting at the same targets.  But it's still fun. 

I used to think that shooting at Koko Head was very limited due to the distances offered.  While many ranges on the mainland have the capacity for 1000+ yards, there are many that are limited to 25 yards!  I was pretty surprised to see so many people report max shooting distances of 25 yards and not being able to confirm zero on anything further than that without going out to someones private land.

The range is closed most of the week. Who's to stop you if you drop a few targets out there hehehe    I'm super busy in the next few months but wouldn't mind helping to put something together to get things moving. I say start a new thread asking for volunteers n donations. I'm sure someone has a construction company we could pay at a discounted rate to fix the facility.

Puuloa is probably your best bet for shooting on paper beyond 200 yards.  Even at Schofield, I don't believe we are allowed to put paper out beyond 100 yards.  Even to place a target out at 100 yards, we need to clear that with range control on a case-by-case basis for targets beyond around 50 yards.  Or at least that's what we were told last time I RSOed. 

For Kokohead, you're probably way up there in the hill to get out to 600 yards.  You'd be way high up there and no way the ROs allow you to set up a target out there. 

KHON news last night had a story about Koko head, talking about how people are waiting for hours for a spot on a bench, and how the facilities a run down and in nmeed of repair.  They brought up that caldwell recently budgeted out money to go to the parks dept on island, and that hopefully koko head sees some of that money.

They won't fix it anytime soon as they claim there is no money and will continue to do so. 

Look at this news story from 1978 the range is identicle except for now its way more run down.



They say there are over 1 million guns in Hawaii now and only 3 hours a day they allow shooting except on weekends and half to 100 or so tables are usually closed due to range officer staffing concerns.

Why doesn't the city just put the operation and maintenance of this facility out for a private contractor to bid for?  It could be run at a profit and revenue for the city could easily be generated.  Or are they hoping that if they don't maintain it it will get so bad that they can condemn it and then build their precious visitor center for Haunama Bay there instead?  The City if they cared at all about firarms safety would impove the range and open another one on the Central/West side somewhere too.  Wish someone would start a petition or something to get more range officers, longer hours and improvements.  Wonder if the Governor or Mayor would even read it.

The gong is about 425 yds.  Unfortunately no way in the world you get 600 yds at Kokohead.
