I've always sorta liked Chavez.

Took some cheek to donate fuel oil to United State's poor during the major power outages in the dead of winter. Not too many paid attention but I appreciated the irony of it.

Not to say it justifies the man and his other actions. I just appreciated his nerve. I don't think any other antagonistic leader has attempted to connect with the American people directly like, nor could they. Didn't do him much good other than to draw some attention to the relationship between the US and Venezuela.

Not sure if this is true but I heard it on the radio last night. I guess some in Chavez's group is blaming the U.S. for giving Chavez the cancer that killed him.

I haven't studied the man in depth, but from what I understand he didn't really have a problem with the United States in principle. His problem was with the corporations that use the US and the IMF as their sword.

Thus his point of supplying the richest nation in the world with heating oil for its poor people when they needed it most: he was pointing out that the US's priorities are not on taking care of its poor while its rich have never been richer. And that the poor in the richest country are like the downtrodden anywhere so he would help them as he could.

Other 3rd world leaders who have so brazenly challenged the morality of the military industrial complex (among other things) have been deposed or killed in the past so the people of Venezuela can be excused for thinking that their man was somehow poisoned by the powers that he spoke out against.

No, he died of cancer. It happens. Fact is that he didn't have enough clout (or oil, or other natural resources) to be either a threat or a target so he didn't matter that much. His willingness to loudly proclaim the immorality of global corporatism while putting his money where his mouth was is what made him popular but it didn't really have any other effect on the continued momentum of the global powers

His beef wasn't with the US citizens but with the government that seems to be the willing partner to the growing global corporate monster. As he saw it, anyway.

Too bad, it wouldve been great if he did something stupid enough to warrant a US led invasion of his country, flying half way around the world is getting old...
